Just as you are planning, I got back racing into 13 years ago with my son. We did one DE at the end of the year in an old 911S, then went out an bought a pair of matching 944 race cars along with a trailer. We did one season of DE's with PCA, one club race with PCA, then started the 944 Cup. Great way to spend time with your kid.

If you are serious about going club racing, skip buying the stock street 944 and buy a race car with a log book. You will get more out of the DE's and be ready to go once you get your license. Plus, much safer doing DE's with all the safety equipment included in a prepared race car, especially if your your son will be behind the wheel.

Enjoy.

You're on the right track. A weekend racing course can teach you a lot and get you a license, but there is no substitute for seat time. Don't rush it. DE's are a lot of fun. Even if you do the weekend course, DE's are a great way to polish your skills.

Is there a specific log book that you need to buy? I assume an instructor has to sign it after each DE?

Nothing to buy in that regard - you'll get a DE log book when you start doing DEs from the host region. You'll get a PCA racing log book at your first PCA race, that is if the race car you buy doesn't already have a PCA racing log book.

The log book referred to is a Race car log book issued by a sanctioning body. However, there are logs kept by some organizations/drivers that track DE time and comments by instructors.

Also +1 on Brent's car. I just hope he's not moving to SP3!

LOL, no I'm just building another SP1, hope it resembles the car in my avatar when I'm done.

I still won't have the HP to hang with you at RA!!

Thanks for the plug Hal/Jeff. Now I suppose I should officially advertise it
