Default please show me your roof rack used for tire transport to/from track

Seen a couple guys doing that - one on a GT3 and another on an STI - but didnt pay close attention. I might need to consider that for next season and wanted to know whats required and how they are strapped down.

thanks

A few things to look at:

I do not track the Cayman anymore, just the GT3. For local track days (less than 250 miles away) I use roof transport for track tires. Have a trailer, but only drag it out for major excursions.

Roof weight rating is about 200 pounds. Hooters/slicks on light wheels are less than 50 pounds each, but a heavy 19' rim with a heavy tire can be 75 pounds - easy to go overweight.

Note that though they look the same, Cayman rack IS NOT the same as 911 rack, so do not buy the Cayman rack that is for sale if you have 911.

Travelling right now, but if you really think you might go this way, I can post up more details this weekend....

Here's pics of my rack based on OEM Porsche rack, struts from HD, 3/8" carriage bolts tying everything together.

thanks for posting.

good trick with the carriage bolt holding the wheel but ouch, wheels are face down!

Seems pretty easy to set up....

have you ever put the whole thing on a scale to see how heavy it is?

Everytime I see a rooftop setup, all I can envision is me dropping a rim on the car while I'm trying to load up. When I took track tires with me to the track, I used a tire trailer hooked to the the car with a Willwood Systems hitch. Worked great.

I have no place to store a tire trailer, if I did, I would have bought jenner's - its was a perfect setup

Though I have and use the "roof rack" system, I think that the "tire trailer" plan is better. Can you go vertical? A loaded tire trailer is only about 4' tall. With an electric winch, rope and a couple of pulleys, (about $200 ) you can raise it up to the ceiling of the garage, and park the car under it.

Factory roof racks often have just enough rating to carry a set of lightweight wheels and tires, ask me how I know...

See this thread...

My rack should be in early next week. Just getting ideas how to mount them.
Like Chuck's idea above.
I figure I would bring the spare rears mounted to the wheels, and the fronts unmounted to keep the weight down.
