It's really not because you have no idea how good someone else's gauge is.

If you want a free check of your gauge, see Competition Tire at a race and they have a machine you can check your gauge on.

Good suggestion, Matt.

Just remember that these things aren't linear across their range so you'll want to know the accuracy in the pressure ranges you actually use.

I checked my cheap gauge against two of the expensive ones. Now all I do is compensate for the three psi difference on my gauge.

The digital gauges can be very precise, but some are really slow to read. Like most things in motorsports, you have to pay to play!

That only works if you assume that the diff (from correct) is consistently 3psi across the relevant psi range and in all conditions. The diffs between my cheap gauges have varied widely.

I have not seen Competition Tire at a PCA race. Who else has a tire pressure gauge testing service? With Pirelli specifying a small range of pressures for their slicks and a "do not use below" warning I need to get my gauges checked!

It's far from cheap, but I got this one for Christmas a couple years ago (I asked for it): http://www.intercomp-racing.com/Prod..._GAUGE_875.cfm
The guys who support me prefer it to the Longacre analog gauges because it is fast and very easy to read. It appears to be very reproducible and has survived just fine after a few years of getting banged around. My Longarce dial gauges have not faired so well. I also hate having to have multiple dial gauges for different pressure ranges (0-30 for race, 0-60 for street and 0-100 for truck and trailer). One digital replaces 3 dial (so it's only 1/3 the price - or so I told my wife).

Also, for what it's worth: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/t...ying-guide.htm

Do you ever get over to Reading? I'm sure they have one there too.

I use and like an analog 0-60PSI Longacre, but I stupidly bought the ball head chuck. The angled one is much easier to mate up and hold in place. I tested it at Braiden Tire at Mosport at I think 35PSI and it was accurate, but I can't vouch for the other pressures. On the note about their customer service, a friend had his digital Longacre fail recently and they immediately sent him a replacement.

+1 for Longacre. Great support, too.

I just grab whatever's lying around Andrew's shop. Most recently, a nice Longacre.
