Somebody Talk Me Out of This...
For reasons that are partially logical and partly not, and certainly not fiscally responsible, I'm considering buying a 911 race car for no other than I want to stop "meaning to race" and actually do it. Happy to learn (the lessons of running a race car, not starting from scratch on the driving side) as I go.
This is one I'm currently looking at, among others: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...iced-sell.html
Would love to get guidance from some of the experienced club racers here. What kind of things should I be thinking about at this point and what questions should I be asking the seller about the car(s)?
Many thanks,
Marc

This is a well known, well sorted car. It is indeed quick and will demand a bit more from its driver than perhaps a few other options out there.
Maintenance intervals would be the only question I'd ask.
With a bit of ballast, it should fall right in to GT4S.

It is a race car, so expect i$$ue$.
I wouldn't get too hung up with questions to the seller (no offense intended)- due diligence on your part will potentially help make the right decision. Somone independent to go over it closely.
Looks like a good car; but why no fuel injection? Also, getting a 964 tub to 2200# with driver doesn't sound right to me.
You may want to also look at Geoffry Ring's 'Mobil 1' car- we haven't seen it in competition recently but I believe that car is very good, also a 964.

If you are really into racing, I'd start with the class of racing that you are interested in and then get a competitive car for it. At the end it's only a function of $$$ you have to spend on car and coaching.

It's a great car if your ready to race. East coast it would be shy on power for GT4S running a 3.3. Dan's car with a 3.3 is putting out a good 50whp more. The problem is to run at that level you will be feeding it a bunch. Nasa would be hp/wght ratio and it would do fine within the rules, but need added aero to compete with the Bimmers.

Disclaimer: a small chunk of my first full-time, "real job" paycheck went to buying a ChumpCar, so I am an idiot and no one with any semblance of sanity should listen to me about anything, ever.
That being said:

I've only ever done a couple beater races, so I'm jealous. TBH, I'd be asking about costs (operation, maintenance, replacement parts, wear items, common failures/things to watch, towing, storage, does it come with spares already?, event entry fees, ???, not profit. never happens with this.) and licensing--i.e. exactly what hoops will you have to jump through to be allowed to race?

Anyone saying otherwise doesn't really belong on this forum.
I'm worse than a crack dealer when someone shows the slightest interest in going to the track for the first time.
Years from now, when you are old and infirmed, you will never say "I'm glad I never bought that race car", you would only say "I regret not buying that race car".

Can't give you specific advice on a car, but I've always wanted to race and never have. Maybe it's a midlife crisis thing, but I decided if I didn't do it now I never would. Being the CPA type the money gives me heartburn every time I think about it, but I'm enjoying the process immensely and my first day on track isn't until Saturday.
