Buy a 996 Cup Car?

So really, what does it cost to run a 997 cup at a club race weekend? Initial acquisition and engine and gear box rebuilding costs apart. I am asking about cost of tires, track side support, brake pads, car prep and other consumables.

As much as a 997 GT3.
The biggest difference is that your will not be doing 5 race weekends on the same set of tyres That is the biggest cost. Will you be using 1 set for the weekend, or 1 set for quali, 1 for the race etc. Will you be doing sprint or endurance etc.
The big cost of those cars is not on the track, but between trackdays, when rebuilds need to be done, parts time out etc.

1 Set for tires
DIY Track support
Gas, food ect.
But the incidental repairs and while you in there Pm is significant, for me approaching 15-20k/yr without the above, not including timed out engine and trans.

figure an engine gets 75 hours, 35k to rebuild, lets call it $500/hour
trans maybe 45? 25 to rebuild, some $400 / hour.
call it $900/hour engine and trans
axles $100/hour
etc
etc
etc
generally, if im stupid enough to even contemplate the math, my guess is operating costs are in the $1500 to $2000/hour .
your first hour of running, you wreck the car, its $40000 for that hour.

good point.
1. how many guys run with insurance? most insurance policies cover DE, some racing. many racer guys sometimes don't pay the fees for race insurance, and yeah if they have it, it covers wreckes after usually a 10, 15,20% deductible;
but then also what if your first lap in your new car, you accidentally grab first instead of fourth and pop the motor and trans....$50k gone. no insurance covers that, or most insurances don't cover that.
I guess my point is...if someone is worried. and someone has to make a choice between lets say spec boxster, or another class of exciting racing at a lower cost, you can do your analysis however you like, but you should know all the risks because many a cup driver have popped a motor or trans rather than gently taking it to 75 hours and pulling it voluntarily.

Gary R/SG-Z,
Thanks.
Gary R: You got it right. I am not asking about the 'capital' costs. I run a race car now that cost me >100k and its not a cup car!! It needs a lot of maintenance work..it all adds up!!
According to SG-Z, race weekend running cost for 'consumables' and track side support is around 10 -12k. That is what I have got from a lot of others too. Not too far off from current racing expenses!!
I am definitely thinking 'cup car' as the next step from stock class air-cooled porsche!!
Thanks.

What "Stock Class" old 911 do you run that costs $10-12K per weekend?? I buy one set of tires ($1200), and even if I had my car transported (which I don't) and supported it would still be about $3000 per weekend. Maybe if you are running GT with 2 sets of slicks, but using the old set of R6s from the last race to practice and a new set to Qual and Race is fine for my old car...

Gary R,
No I don't spend that much now. But it comes to around 5 - 6k I easily. One and half sets of tires, brakes, transport, gas, and all the usual things.
