Default Spec 996

What run group does Spec 996 run with at a typical club race?

Typically the "fast" group - with the GT and Cup cars.

See for yourself for any given race: Go to "Rennpoints.com", "class records", select "Spec996" and "any track" - follow through to any given race and you'll see the group and how they compare with the others in that group.

+996, that is until we have enough cars for our own race group

It is difficult to compare since there is no times for a Spec 996 at the 3 tracks I run:Summit Point,Watkins Glen and New Jersey motorsports park. I guess it depends on the car count.Looking at the times for Sebring it looks like the few spec 996 ran with GTB1, H ,I. I am considering coverting my h 99 996 to a Spec 996.Would like to get opinions on this option.

From my experience, SP996 typically runs lap times around the front of H class, and will compete with 6-cups that are not driven particularly fast. Track and driver dependent of course. Bryan Bell is probably the quickest and most experienced of the SP996 drivers right now (though Bray and Mozdyn put down some very quick times also). Check his times against other cars on mylaps to get a good idea of the potential of the cars with the current talent pool.

Always nice when folks make positive contributions.

There's not a single SP996 driver that is unhappy with the spec tire.

You would be better served to build an H or I car depending on whether it's a 3.6 or 3.4. There are nearly zero Spec 996's in the northeast. Maybe a good strategy would be to use the JRZ suspension with your build that way it would be an easy transition into Spec 996 if it became popular in our area. It's simple to add the cup wing after the fact. A lot of H drivers in our area.

I tried the BFG tires and they are adequate for sure. Better than RA1's and 888's but not as good as Hoosiers. Once again an easy transition if you convert later.

For the NE right now I am with "good Hands" above. Build the car with the SP996 JRZ package and run in H. Then when the numbers start to grow in your area change the rear deck lid and remove 200# and run it SP996.
When I am driving well and my SP996 is hooked up there is not a H that can bet me. The car is a lot of fun with the the lighter weight.
With a SP996 you can run in: H, I, GTB1 or SP996 easily.
BFG are great tires for the SP996. Last a long time and stick just a well as Hoosiers with the lighter car.
The SP996 class will grow big time over the next few years. I hear talk from SBOX and H guys now of converting. Plus a lot of E guys are looking to move up to a newer / faster car.

Let us know if you need any help or info about SP996, we are a very helpful group.
