Mark, I have found the VisionRacer VR3 to be a great blend between being relatively sturdy, attractive and taking up a small footprint. I've sold about a dozen of them over the last three years and I like them. I cannot recommend the black satin finish, it's not durable.
I like it WAY better than the Obutto or Bob Earl's solution. The other one I like (and the only other I own personally besides the VR3) is the Fanatec RS Cockpit, but delivery is not reliable and you need more dedicated space for it.

VisionRacer has a shipping warehouse in LA, so delivery and support are very good.

I'll second what Peter had to say....I'm the rep for the NYC area, great unit, use 10 of them in a simulator room at a go kart track. Durable for home use (as well as commercial with some mods). Works well with all major off the shelf wheel/pedals. Go triple monitor mount, a bit of a pain to get everything lined up but worth it.

Space is an issue therefore I thought the VR may be the way to go. I would really like to try one or others, it sounds like you have a VR at VIR, is that correct? Also I have used the Virtual GT about 5 times and love it but it has a huge footprint and price.
Thank you
Mark

You'll find the Virtual GT WAY too big (really a v1.0 version of hardware) and the Fanatec likely to be too big, too.
John has a great point about the triple screen monitor mount for the VR3 (I tested the beta in November of 2011), but that materially increases the footprint, as well.
