Default M & K Muffler for early 911

I'm looking for something lighter than the stock muffler, for noise restricted tracks. Needs to be about as quiet as stock too. I just found out about these but the website has no dB specs. Any feedback on these or a better muffler for my '73?

Mike - Ben is a regular over on Pelican and makes really nice stuff (2/2 not quiet, 2 in 1 out better I think) but if I were you I would talk to Dan J. about the RSR muffler setup he built for Dick Strahota using some small Burns mufflers. Meets LRP restrictions and IIRC had no ill effects on the dyno. I'm most likely getting my headers custom made by Brian (RarlyL8 on Pelican), he and Ben have joined up - http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...ve-merged.html

I have one on my 70. Beautifully made but definitely noisier than stock- still not outrageous.

On a bone-stock 3.2 w/ Georges headers it is 81dBs (I use it as my Laguna muffler). Definitely louder than stock with a fairly significant drone at idle, which I actually like but would probably be irritating for around town driving.

I have the whole M&K header RSR muffler system on my GT car. It is loud and there are some measures that need to be taken to pass sound at LRP

Pic 1headers and muffler, note cap in one outlet, Pic 2: one outlet capped and turndown in place. Pic 3: baffle in turndown.

Using a combination of these items I can direct where the exhaust sound goes etc.

Note that I have a Gen 1 RSR muffler which has no packing just some internal baffles... I believe late generations of this muffler are made with SS packing.

Tim,

Have you done any comparisons of the George's and M&K headers on the dyno? They look really nice.

Unfortunately no...

Even though I have access to a dyno pretty much whenever I want, Its seems every time I get on the rollers I have changed more than one thing that will affect the results..

Mike send me an email at cmartin911 at mac dot com if you want to see some pics of the Magnaflow (Magnaflow part #11385) setup I had on my car. It was about $200 installed including the parts and it was WAY quieter than megaphones, slightly louder than the stock banana muffler but lighter. It is very similar to what Gary et al use on their cars at Lime Rock. I tried to upload here but I keep getting an error.

Thanks for the info, I emailed Chris.

Those M & K headers look great, should really flow on a race engine.

Will also try to contact Dan J, I know he's made some great ones up.
