Canadian Randy Smith wins the 944 Cup feature yesterday at the Canadian Historic Grand Prix at Mosport Motorsorts Park, pictured here with Cup Daddy (just left of Smith) and David Deacon (right), founder of the legandary Rothmans Porsche 944 Challenge Cups.

Smith overcame an incident earlier in a qual race along with resulting suspension problems placing him in the rear of the field only to come back an edge a swarm of 944's.

On Deacon, he came up with the idea for the Rothmans 944 series when he was general manager for Porsche Canada in the mid 1980's and was intent on giving the 944 a genuine racing legacy to help sell more cars. He reports it was a tough sell because the importer for the car was Volkswagon who was opposed to any racing sponsorship and Porsche wanted it to be a 911 series.

So Deacon found sponsorship with Rothmans and argued the 944 would be more affordable for Canadians than the 911. He got his way and the legacy began.

Officially? I suppose Randy Smith, Chris Lubinski, Mark Wolff and Steve O'Connell - in that order.
