I was asked by another member [DCP] to share my experience this past weekend at a PCA DE at Texas World Speedway running CCW with my new Toyo 205/50/15 RRs on my 99 Miata. They went through 6 cycles of 20 minutes each and 1 30 minute cycle over two days, about 50 laps total. The photos show the lateral cracks that developed in 3 of the 4 tires [LF, RF, RR]. I didn't drive over anything other than the track and had no spins or "offs." The tires were consistently at 37-38 psi hot. Both the RF and RR tires were mounted with the DOT label towards the left or driver side of the car.

My previous tires were shaved RA1s that lasted over 30 cycles on the same track with the same setup.

Anyone have an idea of what's happening with the tires? Are they delaminating?

Thanks, DCP., that's a very informative link. I've run through a lot of Hoosiers and some RA1s and never seen this problem

I sent the information to TOYO yesterday, no response so far. I contacted TireRack. They asked for pictures, but denied knowing of any problem.

This is interesting, and sounds like what Toyo has in mind. Apparently 205's are susceptible as well. The pictures above are just like what we saw, only no chunks of tread/rubber were lost.

Correction...A sizeable chunk peeled off A friend of mine running on a 944 had the entire tread peel off.

Hopefully the answer involves replacing the already damaged tires.

Contact whoever you bought the tires from and they will handle it. We are doing that for our customers.

What is Toyo doing to eliminate this obvious (very dangerous) issue?

That link says different for Hoosiers than Hoosier says. http://www.hoosiertire.com/mounting.HTM

Maybe Phil can say which is correct?

I agree with what 9.5 degrees said. The R888 just sucked, it sounds like we have a safety issue now!!!!!!!!

I can't understand why everyone, Toyo and NASA are so intent on not using the RA1 tire. We have ran them for years with no issues. The RA1 is a great tire. Please keep the RA1.

Not such a great tire anymore IMHO, they have hanged the compound and the long life of the RA1 is now a thing of the past.

I talked to two Toyo guys at PRI last week and they said there has been no change in the compound over the last 7-9 years (they couldn't remember when it was changed).
