Default Helmet Recommendations

I'm getting ready for my first DE and have been looking for an entry level helmet. I believe I have it narrowed down to two and wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with either of them and recommendations?

HJC AR10
http://www.apexperformance.net/CartGenie/prod-2199.htm

and the

G-Force GF Pro Eliminator
http://www.apexperformance.net/CartGenie/prod-1645.htm

I have tried the G-force on and it seems to have a good fit.

Open to other recommendations. Thanks.

Make sure you sit in your car, top down, with the helmets you are considering. Check for roof clearances (important for tall drivers). Do you wear glasses? Sunglasses? Practive putting those on and off with your helmet choices.

I like my HJC.

Also don't rule out expired helmets! For DE I don't think the dates matter. I bought a brand new expired Simpson Bandit for a pretty big discount and couldn't be happier.

PCA requires a Snell 2005 or newer helmet.

Also buy a balaclava. Keeps your helmet cleaner, and makes it easier to take on and off.

Plus, don't buy a helmet you haven't tried on. When trying them out leave it on for a while, 15-30 mins, it is the only way to tell if it's creating any pressure points (unless it's a really bad fit). You might feel like an idiot leaving on that long, but it's your head and money we're talking about. You want the helmet to be snug, but not cause pain or feel like you will tear you ears of removing it. Snug but comfortable is what you are trying to find.

Thanks guys for the advice! I did wear the G-force for quite awhile and it seemed pretty comfortable. Any experience with either the HJC or the G-Force? I would guess that they are similar in safety. Does one generally have a better reputation than the other? The HJC sounds a little nicer with removable pads and looks like the airflow would be better.

I have the HJC and I really like it. Quite comfortable and most of the padding snaps in and out for cleaning or wiring radio stuff.

That being said, it fit me the best. Some helmets are round some are more oval. Just make sure there are no pressure points that will give you a screaming headache in 30 minutes and you'll be fine. At this point the fit on your head is paramount. Later, if you get more serious, you may find you need different features.

Default Helmet fitment tips

Here's a link to a page on our website that discussed helmet fitment - scroll toward the bottom.

http://www.apexperformance.net/cartg...lmetsizing.asp

Take a look at your head shape. Say you are sitting in a chair and someone is standing behind you looking at the top of your head. Are you more oval front to back or round? If round, Gforce will fit better. If oval, HJC will fit better from our experience.

From round to oval - here's a quick list from our experience:

OMP Sport & Zamp - round
Gforce - more round shaped
Bell - between Gforce and HJC
HJC - more oval shaped
Stilo - seems to fit a lot of head shapes (but also much more expensive)

Of course, if you get something in and it doesn't fit at all, you are welcome to exchange it. You just pay shipping. If you have a shop closeby, stop in and try on some helmets - that's the best advice!

Good luck.

I had several brand helmets and always experienced headaches until I purchased an Arai. Love it!
