Default Tach Wire To Traqmate. Which Wire?

I am adding RMP to my traqmate and I don't know which wire on the tach is the coil wire. Car is the 1979 911 SC (Euro Model)

Can anyone point out which wire or explain how to check continuity? Pix show the back of my tach.

TIA

Porsche used a black with purple stripe from 84 thru 97, and probably before. See if that is on the tach.

I have one with a stripe. Its a little hard to be sure of the color because of age. I looked at the coil to see if a stripped wire came off of it, but no.

Will it hurt the Traqmate or the tach if I connect for a test?

Shouldn't. Set up the Traqmate dash to read RPM, then touch (brush) it to the lead on the back of the tach while the car is running. Tach reading on the TM means you're set.

Thanks, Peter. I don't have the new dash. I have the DU. They don't show RPM. Only on lap analysis can I see RMP. Is there another way to view what the unit is recording? I want to have it working by VIR next week.

Randy, the Classic DU (the older long, black monochromatic display) DOES display all sensor inputs real time. From page 23 of the 2010 User Manual.

Menu System
All of the Display Unit features are accessible through a text menu system. To access a feature
use the UP and DOWN buttons to highlight the item you want on the screen. Press SELECT to
activate that item. Some items actually perform a function while others go to other menus. This
chart shows the menu tree.

On this photo the RPM connection is the middle of the three with the Black/Purple showing with the shrink wrap on the connection--
The Blue wire is Traqmate and the green is Shift light.

Interestingly, I tapped the blk-purple wire and got no RPM feed. No other wire on the tach sends signal either. I did tap the coil directly and got signal. I guess I will have to get some heat sheilded wire and run from the coil into the cabin where the SU is mounted.
I just can understand why there is no signal at the tach. Any ideas?

No RPM signal at wire on tach --
IIWM I would put a tester on each wire.
Also it might be a ground problem.

Oh, tach is working. Had the car running while tapping each wire on the back. No signal to Traqmate. Coil sends siganl no problem. Go figure.

Peter, you probably have this answer for me.

Orbit is about to re-install the Traqmate again in my new '10 GT3, is there another way to install the antique Traqmate system to pick up RPM without slicing into the wiring harness by the ECU? I had this in my last '10 GT3 and it created many problems, cel, etc

OBD is still wishful thinking?

Hah! No, but not immediately available. Sometime soon...

To not tap into to the CAN, I think you could adapt an MSD pulse pickup to one of the distributorless coil pack trigger low-tension wires for TM RPM. Part number 8918. Non-invasive.

Info here. http://www.msdignition.com/Products/...MR_Pickup.aspx

On the (older) RPM interface I have there is a switch to select 'electronic' or 'coil' input for RPM. The instructions have you set it to 'electronic' when attaching to the tach. Don't know what sort of interface box you have, but you might want to check that out.
