996 C2 Race Car build vs. turnkey Spec Boxster

Mark/Randy - the original comparison was merely the cost of coverting a C2 to a race car vs. buying a finished Spec Boxster. He's not decided on any one classification but my guess he will build it ultimately to a H class car like Mark's. The 996 is at the shop now to begin the journey.

FWIW, an SP996 is typically a faster car than an H class car.

Actually it varies a bit from track to track.

Mike, you are too serious and didn't take the bait. I actually haven't been on the track with a spec996 car, but am interested in a real world comparison.
Are the 3.4l cars able to get the weight down? According to the rules it looks like I would need to get it down to 2625 to be at the min weight. Not sure how to do that. I am at 2800 now and would have to start swapping body panels and glass out to get down 200 more pounds.

It's very possible to get the weight down. I was skeptical at first, but my car barely weighs enough on empty. I have a passenger seat in the car both for ballast, and for use instructing, and a 19qt cool suit cooler with a very stout cooler tray that I have to keep full to make weight. I weigh 200lbs fully suited up. I've not weighed it empty, but I would guess that if I took out the cooler, tray, and passenger seat, I would be somewhere between 2600 and 2625.
BTW, watch out for Bray and Bell, the Spy vs Spy 996 boys. They're a lot faster this year.

Took it to the GC guys. He had some prior experience with them in the old Kinetic days. Got your message but was doing a presentation (working??) this afternoon. You and he need to hook up so we can get him to take the plunge to CR vs. just doing DE's. Not knocking DE's.....just CR's are a lot of fun.

Thanks for the confirmation Mike. My 888's are due for replacement so I think I'm going to go with the 245 up front this time round.

Chris, I know the GC guys well from the good old Performance days. I went to Matt when Bob and Steve left PI. They will do a good job, but they aren't as **** as Matt is, and I have gotten used to that level of perfection.
On the tire thread above, isn't the profile number a % of the tire width? You should want the 245/40s so they are closer in diameter to the 285/35s, don't you?

Something else to consider with boxster vs 996 is that the boxster is outgunned at most de events, not a lot of fun when you are passed by most cars. In the north east h class is very strong and spec 996 non existent. I would suggest building for h which can be run in spec 996 but you can't go the other way (though you would have some weight disadvantage in spec)

Dun, I think you have it backwards. You can build a Spec996 to run in H, but not necessarily the other way around.
Spec has a specific suspension system that most would not think about unless planning to run in that class specifically. If you don't put a LWFW in, then I think the spec would be legal in H. Add some ballast and maybe swap the wing and you should be good to go.
I have motons and headers which disqualify me for Spec. Can you run the stock aero kit or do you need the spec wing?
