^^^ the above and the SP996 will have some slightly higher running costs mostly in tires.

Chris, I know I owe you a call, I'll try later today. I think I might know where a prepped H car is here in town, and no it's not mine.

If your buddy has been DE'ing a 996 at Road Atlanta for a while, then he might not like the Boxter option as much. Spec 996 isn't big here and I am always looking for more H and I cars to run with.

If I am not mistaken tarett.com had a complete suspension package for sell for those who wanted to do 996 spec conversion.
Only thing to be aware of, imho, educate yourselves on what should be done to M96 motor to prolong its life so it would not blow prematurely.

As of spec boxsters - I saw 2 those cars to blow engines last season at DEs in most innocent situations. M96 in 3.6l C2 is imho still a little bit better engine.

The shock package from JRZ is more expensive than the PSS9/10 Spec Box package, and the 996 Spec use a LSD (hense the better trail braking), but the rest of the conversion is pretty much the same as a Spec Box. Conversely you don't have to pay for a ligtweight roof....

+1
But add the 996 does have the wing which adds a little cost and a big improvement with aero.

Combined, the wing and LSD truly transform the SP996. The LSD of course makes big differences in braking and powering out of turns. Add the wing to it, and the car becomes very planted, and a blast to drive at speed. At TWS, the fastest of the SP996 guys pretty much outpaced all but the Cup's.

just fyi - your link to 996 spec rules gives "HTTP 404 (Not Found)".

what most people with 996 use for a front bumper if they put cup wing in the rear?

Depending on where you are really. East coast def c2 since there is no real competition with a boxter. West coast is def boxter land!

If your friend is in the Atlanta area, neither Spec Boxster nor Spec 996 are good choices. At the RA race there were `zero' Spec 996s and only 2 Spec Boxsters.
At the 48 hrs of Sebring, PCA biggest event of the year, there were only 2 Spec 996s and 6 Spec Boxsters. If your friend is in Texas go with either one and he will race in big fields at all events.
At Lime Rock there will be 5 Boxsters and again 'Zero' Spec 996s.
These classes have not taken off in the SE.

Yeah, the link I have is to last year's PCA rules. Never got around to updating it.

Rules require a GT3 front bumper and allow a splitter of defined dimensions. With the wing, you really need a splitter as well.

Here's the link to the 2012 PCA rules, which include SP996

http://pca.org/portals/cr/2012%20PCA...ule%20Book.pdf

Ah, and BTW, while it looks like a Cup wing, it is a specific Spec996 wing made by Getty. The Cup wings are very similar, but not spec.

+1 for the SP996. It is all the car you want and sometime I lift early when I get scared!

This is slightly off topic (apologies) but I just had a look at the spec 996 rules and noticed the tyres profiles are 245/40 and 285/30 which I found interesting because I had avoided a 245/40 tyre up front on the basis that the 3.8% circumference difference might result in ABS triggering a bit more readily than would be ideal. I am guessing that isn't the case since these tyre sizes are what your running.

I've not experienced any issues with ABS with our tire configuration. I'd rather have a 245/35 on the front or 285/35 on the rear, but unfortunately BFG doesn't make the tire in that size.
