Burning Brakes
Seems kind of a bummer. i think we should rally behind the companies moving technology forward and shifting us away from the mid-eastern oil teet. I feel electric is going to surpass combustion in performance sooner rather than later. And they can totally control the power, etc to maximize handling/grip, etc. Instant torque, etc. Hats off the Fisker for taking the road less traveled. GM too for the Volt.

We did "rally behind" them. Forcibly. With billions of our tax dollars.
I'll wait until the technology works well enough for private equity to finance these companies w/o government drones picking winners & losers among favored campaign contributors with the taxpayers' money.

A Saturday morning internet rant . . .
Leaving the combustion is evil debate aside,
dino is still the most cost effective storage medium for energy. If countries / continents with $10 a gallon (equivalent) fuel prices (taxes not costs) have not embraced alternative energy modes of individual transportation, what makes anyone think a land with $4 a gallon will be the first too? Muscle cars & SUVs to hot hatchs & estates maybe, significant battery cars not in the near term.
The current reliability of combustion platforms has had 100 years to mature to where they are today. Fisker, GM, Tesla, and others will need time to work out the gremlins in these very complicated new systems for all applications. The automative public has not shown the same patience as the DOD in waiting for vendors to get "hybrid systems" working right once purchased (Osprey, etc.).
Market forces are the main driver of such change, and the market hasn't taken that fork in the road yet here or overseas. Pioneers get the arrows, settlers get the land.
And for every MPG saved in the west thur technology, conservation, or regulation, the BRICs are going to replace it with new drivers on the road.
So act locally, think globally, but be prepared for "it" to get worse not better. Now I need to get back to digging my doomsday shelter . . .
YMMV.
