Default Helmet communication install pictures?

I'm self installing some Sampson Racing helmet kits in our team helmets. I've probably seen a hundred of these things on helmets, but never really noticed where the wires are attached to the helmets. I have a good idea on the earbud plug, but the mic wire?? Anyone have a picture of how theirs are mounted? Thanks,

Greg H.

Iirc grassroots had a write up on it with pics. Google search brought it up I think.

I just got mine too, so I'm collecting notes and tips to setup my helmet next weekend.

Thanks. That answers my question. It appears the mic cord goes behind the Hans attachment. I was trying to fit both the mic and ear bud in front of the Hans. Now the only problem is I realized every helmet is built a little differently - even between different model Bells. Throw in a Pyrotect and an HJC and I have to reinvent the inside routing for every helmet!

Thanks again Brian, those pictures are great. I think I'm going to try for the first Bell install, but those pictures just go to show there is nothing standard. I'm wiring on the left side for a crew hook up through the driver's door. I've seen a lot of helmets wired on the right side - I assume single seaters or right hand drive or the driver does it him/herself.

If you go to the Racing Electronics website under "manuals/how to's" there is a YouTube video of the helmet kit install. I think they do vary a bit but worked for me putting one of their kits in a bell. Little rough on a new helmet, next one I get comes pre installed...

PS pay real attention to the location of the mic, I'm a little nervous in the event I ever really "use" my helmet I might be eating the boom...it's installed right but not a lot of room

For the boom mic I used a soldering iron to melt the routing hole & groove into the styrofoam padding and hot glue to secure it. Some suggested to use hot glue to secure the cheek pad back into the helmet, but I feel you can not repostion the pad into the helmet fast enough to do so. Instead I used a couple pieces of 2-sided foam tape to suppliment the adhesive already there. It's made it through its' first season okay.

One thing to keep in mind if you have an FIA 8860 approved helmet- don't drill holes into the shell, because if you do that, the scrutineer can, in theory, bounce it.

Does anyone make a extension "Coil Cord"? Mine is the short straight kind. I really would like a longer "Coiled" one like on VR's helmet.

Yes, plenty of places make coiled extension cords, but instead of that I would recommend swapping out the mic kit for one that has the coil cord. Adding a coil cord extension also adds a potential contact failure point.

Here's a couple of pics for you guys to show you how my helmets are done. The headset jack is not riveted to the shell (FIA 8860 helmet, my other helmets are riveted), and the coiled cord is wrapped around the drink tube system, which works if your drink system and radio harness jack are placed together.
