Default Help Me Understand Diesel Own/Operate/Maintain

I am new to diesel ownership and need some input on driving tips, operation and maintenance. I have been so I know oil changes at 5k, fuel filters at 10k.
What other items should I keep an eye on?
What about Cetane additive? Necessary? When?

I'm also newer to diesel and am learning about cetane additive as well.

Remember to flog it every now and then to get rid of the carbon deposits; on ramps work well

Upgrade to some good Hawk brake pads, seriously!

Ron Z told me install the Hawk amulance pads.

By flogging, you mean WOT to blow it out?

I have an 2004 Diesel Excursion that I have had for three years and the diesel guy at the local Ford dealer has been very helpful. The advice he gave me was the same as listed above, oil and filter every 5k and fuel filters every 10k. When I asked him about aditives he said if you feel better go ahead but you don't need them. His other advice on the 6 litre ford is keep it stock. Chips etc are something the engine cannot stand.

Forget the centane additives. Occasional fuel treatment may or may not help the injectors...I never have. Just run decent fuel. Maintain according to schedule. Don't chip it.

If you tow enough, you don't have to worry about "flogging" the engine, but remember they like to work for a living. Short trips are the worst.

I've been through so many of these trucks I've lost count. The farm trucks are all gone now, but I keep the 2500HD Duramax as my driver and haul truck.

Mine sports a 3.0 Daimler CRD - same as in the Sprinter. A lot of guys are deleting the DPF saying that hurts these engines and bottles them up in power and efficiency just to reduce the soot a little. Some are adding the provent catch can and eliminating the oil vapor leakage into the turbo charge pipe (which can damage the swirl motor).

Not sure what the ambulance pads are, I use the Hawk HP Superduty pads (for my 2008 F250 that's HB556P.710).

I was joking about blowing it out, but I do like to go WOT in my truck, when it goes north of 40 lbs of boost it is impressive

The 6.4 is a great motor.

Only need fuel additives in winter (when very cold it helps).

Stick with fresh fuel. Look for stations that commercial guys use. Crap fuel is an injectors worst enemy.

Stock power is great but I run a mild tune (150hp) from Spartan that really wakes it up yet keeps EGT's in check even when towing heavy.

The stock air filter is fine but stupid expensive to replace at the stealership. When it was due for a change I replaced it with a washable filter for only about $30 more. The washable filter will last 100k miles. As a bonus, spool up is better with the replacement filter.

Enjoy!

What kind of improvement are you guys seeing from the Hawk pads? Less dust?
