How many of you guys run a 996 as a track car? I recently sold my full race 944/968 hybrid because I wanted something different (I ran that car 14 seasons) more modern, and that didn't have to be trailered. I am an instructor who drives the car very hard. This year my son will be turning 18 and beginning his DE driving, so the car will get used heavily--eight or more sessions a day.

I can't afford a GT3 so it will have to be a standard 996, with seats/harnesses, upgraded shocks, brake pads, and R compounds. My concern of course, is that the standard 996 engines grenade with some regularity. What has been the experience of those of you who run these cars on the track? Are the horror stories true? Anyone run such a car for a couple years with little or no problems?

Yes it is being done. Add the X51 oil pan, and your safety equipment. It is a fast, and safe platform. We had a few SP996 runing at the Maverick Club Race at ECR a few weeks ago. I also added an accusump.

There is a fellow who drives with our local PCA group during open lapping track days who gutted his 996, took out the passenger seat, added a roll bar, modified the exhaust system, upgraded the suspension and put slicks on. When I was thinking of modifying my 993, his advice to me was "Don't do it, get yourself a 996 and mod the heck out of it. There are plenty of 996s on the market and they are cheaper than 993s" and I think he was right. He is not as fast as a 997 GT3s, but he is the fastest non-Turbo, non-997 GT3 out there in our local group.

The 996 makes a great track car. Prices are affordable on the cars. They are safe, reliable, and a very honest handling platform. Look at the SP996 rules in the PCA Club Racing rule book for a great suspension upgrade path (JRZ RS, GT3 sways, GT3 LCA...).

An X51 oilpan is a must IMHO.

And don't forget Stock H 1999-2001 or Stock I 2002-2004. Since my first DE I have taken my 2001 from Street car to fully prepped track car. I only have ABS and no PSM or other Porsche handling system in my way. I did replace my engine with reman three years ago due to oil in coolant. the car has been a pleasure to own and drive. If you go with two drivers and DE then I would use Toyo for longer wear. Hoosiers provide the best grip but two drivers in one DE weekend will wear out. More than one set perhaps.

Do it! Do it quickly, and come to TWS in March. We could have a field of 8-10 cars by then. The cars are quick, running up near the front of the letter classes, and just behind the Cup Cars.

The 996 always gets the bad press for grenading motors but I have seen just as many air cooled motors go during track use and when they do it costs twice as much (or more) to rebuild. I have three years of hard running on mine and is going strong.

Do the IMSR,
Do something to the Sump either an X51 (if you can find one) or an LNE deep sump.

Consider an accusump as well, but that's not a panacea. We lost a 944 engine
due to rod bearing failure while running a baffled accusumped car.
Of course that was with 30 hours of endurance racing on the engine.

I've got a few parts which I think can go on a 996 I was planning to use on my Boxster S
but moved to an aircooled 911.

GT3 front sway bar, gt3 front control arms, tarrett drop link knock-offs.
