I arrived at the Monaco GP by boat a few years ago, then walked to my seat. Very cool and hassle free way to get to a race.

It's Austin, not San Antonio. They are 80 miles apart FYI

Also the $25 million comes from a state Major Event Trust Fund and is applied for each year. So there should be no issues with exclusivity of a F1 event.

"According to state laws, the fund is to be backed by taxes generated by the event itself and not cost taxpayers anything. Additional sales, alcohol, lodging and car rental tax revenues attributable to the event are deposited into an account at the comptroller's office. The host city can then tap the account to cover expenses tied to the event, such as security. The process would repeat in future years, assuming the F1 organizers reapplied."

Edit: Found what you were talking about on autoweek.com

http://www.autoweek.com/article/20111025/F1/111029917

"However, the legal guidelines for dispersing money from the Texas Major Events Trust Fund state that the event can't be held "more than one time in any year." A spokesperson for the state comptroller told the Austin American-Statesman newspaper that they interpret the rule to mean such an event can't be held more than once a year in Texas. But local attorney Bill Aleshire, who has filed past lawsuits in opposition to the race, has notified the comptroller's office that he interprets the wording to mean the state may not pay the Trust Fund money if there is another F1 race anywhere in the United States. The issue could eventually be decided in court."

I would trust the state comptroller more than the local attorney who is opposed to the race...

Ha! I drove part of it this AM by accident since 495 was closed off coming out of Lincoln tunnel. I noticed a few houses with front porches that will be premium real estate...

Well, besides Montreal (which in real sense isn't a street course), what street track isn't...?

Looks pretty cool for a street track actually although I have to say I didn't get very much of that "Monaco", or "Spa feel" that that lawyer guy was talking yesterday...
If the long "straight" before the tight left-right before the finish straight is straight enough for the to go flat behind another car, it could/should provide a good passing point.
Maybe couple of others (T4 & T5-6) but hard to tell and it seems that part is very narrow unless they widen the roads in those narrow parts.

But I'm glad this is happening! Will go for sure.

Did some of the streets seem very narrow to you? Much narrower than Lon Beach?

Guys, we need to organize a PCA support race for this event!!! Running with the Grand-Am guys in July is totally cool, but this would be even better!

I wish you luck, but I'm not optimistic - some variation of Supercup I expect.

Ferrari Challenge is a given and I suspect the IMSA GT3 Cup if it's still in existence. Bernie was happy with them in Montreal last year, I mean they paid him well

do remember, this is a professional race weekend - ordinary folk couldn't care less about fat rich b*stards cruising round in expensive street cars, like the kids from the 'hood care? At least Supercup has professional drivers, with a few old-time greats. Doesn't IMSA GT3 exclude top drivers, if not, why not ask Montoya and some other NASCAR folk along.
