Dave Leonard, of SpeedSouth, greciously let me drive his full race Z06 for a few laps at Barber today. What an incredibly well-prepared, well-built, well-sorted racecar. It was so balanced, so predictable...it drove just like my M3 on steroids...or a Cup car on steroids.
I was really, really impressed...

i am thinking about building such a car over winter if stars will align. it needs a '09 car donor and about of $20-$25K should get it done to some degree, at least initially. opinions differ on how long it will live but i saw such rebuilt cars at lime rock and sniffed all over them, with some required upgrades and replacements done stock 2009 z06 can be turned into quite a monster with performance comparable to cup car at 1/4th of a cup car cost.

Dave I'm glad you had an opportunity to drive one. They're very fun cars to race. I run against them all the time in ST2 (T1 cars with a wing) and traded once with a fellow competitor for a practice session. We both had a blast and developed some respect for each other's cars.
I don't know how tweaked that motor is but the T1 motors put out around 385 rwhp and cost something stupid like $3,500....
The other car I'd like to drive now is that new Mustang race car that won the ST2 Nationals. It's icing the field in WSC, and ran away with ST2 at Mid Ohio....

it is a good question if it is worth going with '09 donor or just get cheapest '05-'06+ donor available in that same line and then replace a motor, not sure, money wise it is kinda will be all the same but labor part will probably add up a bit if you cannot swap it yourself.

LOL hard to believe, eh? But I only drive it on track...
Hahahahaha! Seriously, though, it appears SpeedSouth builds great cars (no affiliation, etc.).

Lemming emailed about this thread. It was my pleasure that Dave and Tim drove the car. I had more fun watching them drive than driving myself. I have been trying to get Tim to drive it since we built it. Thanks for the positive comments by everyone. We are all car guys and it is rewarding to be able to drive other marques. Dave is a great guy and always enjoy talking to him. See you at Daytona this weekend!

I wouldn't mind seeing the video from the few laps I drove in David's car, even with being really held up in pretty much every lap. I suspect it didn't look or sound much like these laps from midday Saturday.
