Default Piece of Junk accelerator pedal assembly

So I guess I've joined the ranks of what many other people have learned. The accelerator pedal assembly on the 996 (Same for 997?) is a massive piece of junk..

The hinge failed (enough so that the pedal was pivoting with two hinge rings snapped and the compression pin would come loose). Looked like the first ring broke a while ago and when the second one let go the pin wouldn't stay. When I pulled the assembly out, I was shocked by the design. This is the kind of thing that a 5th grader in shop class would get remedial tutoring for.

I can't for the life of me understand my Porsche would design the hinge this way. Being cheap I understand. But 5 thin plastic rings for a hinge is ridiculous - especially when a few more pennies worth of plastic and perhaps a gram of weight would have made this quite durable.

The hinge is pretty much designed to withstand the least load possible without breaking..

In my 996/GT3, I was able to blip (H/T) with the top of my foot, but in my Koni spec car I have the brake boost disabled. I can't give a delicate pinkie toe blip. I am hitting the pedal the old fashioned way with my heel and that puts a lateral load on the pedal with the obvious result.

So I am obviously not the first one to encounter this. Does someone make a more sane alternative? Does the 993 part fit? What have other people done?

I really hate to buy a replacement part made the same crappy way.. If I do, I'll modify it so that the hinge is reinforced. Maybe thats a product.

suggestions??

I hate the stock plastic pedal in my Boxster but could not locate something better. Where did this unit pictured come from?

Modified Rennline. They were to have brought one out specifically for the 996. Check with them.
The one linked above goes on the stock pedal and doesn't address the root problem. IMO it need to be eliminated altogether.

About 2 yrs ago I was in discussions with Rennline when I made this change- at the time they asked for my stock pedal to play with. I assumed that they'd come up with something since but had moved on.

This looks like Rennline's 993 pedal.. You were able to get them to modify it?? That looks great.

They? No.
Bit of an expensive gamble but it just looked like it would work in in a non-Egas 996.
And it did. Nicely adjustable for the different planes the pedals operate at too.

Funny this is a failure item. On the 911SCs and Carreras of the 80's the throttle/hinge was molded out of a single piece of plastic. I was always amazed that they didn't fail instantly let alone after 100's of thousands of miles. It was a great piece of minimalist engineering.

I don't know about the 80's cars but it may be that in non-track applications they are both probably fine (unless you rev match on the street).

The picture is their adjustable pedal for the 944. Have and I love it.
