Serious question....

 

That's a tough question. I like the East Coast, especially the Philly area, but you know that. I just wish it were a little warmer here. The Carolinas are nice but the fall storms can get pretty bad, and GA, FLA et al have it worse. Maybe something a little inland like Kentucky or Tennesse might be ok if you can find any culture.

Forget the middle of the country, their weather is crap so that leaves California and the left coast. Probably the nicest area is around SF or a little north, but it is also the priciest.

If you really want great weather, it's always 84 in Hawaii.

 

Up here Dave, great tracks nearby, lots of water, comfortable summers. Then there is winter .. like skiing?

I have lived in Florida, New York, South Carolina, Washington, Texas and Illinois. So far, I like Chicago the best. Sure, the winters can be unbearable at times, the politicians should be lined up and shot and the taxes are just ridiculous, but the summers make up for everything. Plenty of nearby tracks too.

 

I actually think my home state of South Carolina is very nicely situated for racing and nice weather. Greenville would be my choice if I moved back. It's in the upstate right underneath the NC mountains. Road Atlanta is not far down the road. CMP is also very close. So are VIR and Roebling Road. The Florida tracks are a days drive.

South Carolina can be brutally hot in the summer which is why I would choose Greenville.

Also for you VR, SC is as red of a state as you can find (other than maybe Texas).

 

I appreciate the input so far. Obviously, some proximity to tracks is key to my life. The SE is IMO the bestt place in the US for road racing, since within a day's tow there are tons of tracks. There are downsides as well, such as mosquitoes that are large enough to have tail numbers & FAA transponders. Colorado is another possibility, but it is a bit short of tracks (one) and a long haul to the Left Coast. Probably a tough sell for The Wife to look at the midwest or Canuckistan, as beautiful as they are, since (a) 7 months of winter is not her bag and(b) we both would prefer to remain in the US. ( Unless Obama is reelected... )

The overall tax-burden sucks, as does the general tenor of politics (if you actually earn living and pay taxes, that is!!!), but the climate and access to everything is second to none. No shortage of nice places to live in SoCal with beautiful communities and access to all manners of sports, shopping (yeah, I mean for car and misc hobby stuff ), and entertainment everywhere you turn. And weather ...the only place more mediterranean than SoCal is the mediterranean. I look at the crap politics as the price one pays for an otherwise great place to live. OTOH, if the freaks up in the legislature (and the freaks voting along with them) continue to assault us working types, I may be putting up my own thread here asking where to live...

If tax reduction is a goal live in upstate SC (fort mill) or one of the counties outside of Mecklenburg county where Charlotte is.

Or better yet move to eastern TN with no state income tax. From somewhere like Kingsport TN the driing times would be

VIR - 3.5 hours
CMP - 4 hours
Mid OH - 6 hours
Atlanta - 4.5 hours
Roebling - 9 hours
Daytona - 10 hours
etc

 

Thanks. No state income tax here already, but very high property taxes. However, escaping taxes is not the issue. Actually having drinking water in a couple of years is. In less than 11 months, Austin has consumed 61% of its sole drinking water supply. You do the math...

And selling our home now is better then then when no one wants to move to the dust bowl.
