Thanks guys for all the laughs

I am finally at a point in my life where I can do what I want to do and racing is something I have wanted to do since my earliest memory. But, I have one holdup - my son. I will always put his wants and needs first and that is why I am concerned about money and time. The last time I checked, there was only ONE drivers seat in the car. So, do I go with my heart and race or do I go with my head and put my son first?

You do both and never look back.

My fondest memories are riding stuffed into Dad's TR-4 on the way to Upper Marlboro Racetrack, watching the windshield come off, helping to tape the headlights and watching him race.

I was 11 then and could heel/toe and double clutch by the time I was 13.

Do both, but if you are worried about money, race a Miata. Cheap and Porsche are mutually exclusive.

Isn't asking this question kind of like posting crash photos?

Consider your son....but don't put him first. You only have one life and you need to do what will make you happy. My Mom is always worried about me and I tell to her to go out and have some fun!

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. At the June DE, one of the committee members had his 18 year old grandson out there. My father-in-law got me into it. As for the fiscal things, I have bartered for a great many parts, do all of my own work (including paint!!!), and get used tires. I also run a relatively inexpensive car.

What kind of sacrifice will you be making of your son? And I don't want to get into parenting advice, but making him provide for himself beyond basic needs will do him a world of good.

Get a 944 and do chumpcar together. About $1000 per driver per event total (hotel/food/entry/gas/repairs/etc).

Buy seat time in someone elses car, that way you will know what the cost is and get familiar.

It will also get you the opportunity to try different formats and classes.

I wish someone gave me that advice.

As has been said, do both. Don't pass up a dream and desire for your son, include him in everything you can. If he's young, make him 'crew', get him a race suit. if he's older, really make him crew, give him responsibility - he'll learn something.

And he will have the COOLEST mom of all his friends! Think about it... he can say 'My mom races Porsche's (or whatever you choose). How cool is that!!

Or a 944.. is really just an Audi so is cheap.

BTW.. if you have a Son if they are old enough it will be fun for the. I have 5 year old little girl and I am getting her into helping me wrench on cars. Just last week I was showing her how to jack up car. Her problem is at 34 lbs she is not heavy enough work the handle, but she tries.
