When I starting reading this, I thought that you were going to say "I regret not buying a 28-foot enclosed trailer"!

I went from driving to the track to towing the car on an aluminum open trailer with a Sequoia and now drive a 2500 HD diesel with a 28' enclosed trailer.

....and yes, the diesel truck is my DD.

Thanks for the out pour of responses, I can always count on Rennlist members. I'm going to start heading farther to larger tracks like Buttonwillow/ Willowsprings Int'l (about 1-3hrs drive each way) and its only going to be possible with a tow vehicle.

I read an article related to my topic and members on the forums were right on; I never considered what would I do if I'm 100miles from home and my track car breaks down. That is going to be one expensive tow bill! It's sad and depressing enough that your track car breaks down (foreseeable costly repair bill) but imagine having to deal with the feeling of being stuck or abandoned after a long and hot day on the track.

Diesel... The open trailer I want weighs 1400lbs + 2800lb track car + possible second of wheels (which I doubt anytime soon) 200lbs = 4400lbs. I'm sure a 6cylinder 3.6 liter should be sufficient? Leaning towards the '08 Touareg 2 since its cheaper due to its below average resale value. Although VW has one of the worst reliability track record. How are the fords in terms of reliability?

'06 Cayenne S is my tow rig and daily driver... has performed beautifully for 71,000 miles (not a single mechanical issue believe it or not - knock on wood). I started with an open trailex, and then moved to a trailex enclosed last season. it is true that I keep finding more and more things to bring along and my tow weight is starting to creep up(now about 6,000 lbs).... but the pig tows this load without issue. I keep knocking the gremlin off my shoulder that whispers in my ear about a proper truck and big trailer; however, I don't really want to deal with another vehicle and the added complexity of a large trailer (wifey still lets me park the trailex in my driveway). And besides, I've got plenty of friends with big trailers when I want to bum some coffee or get out of the heat.

BTW, pretty decent cayennes can be had now even in the low 20s.

Jeep Grand Cherokee was available with the Mercedes diesel 6 cyl from '07 to '08 if you are on a tight budget. You can get up to 30+ mpg hwy which is also the same power plant found in sprinter vans. They can be had in the $20Ks for 07 and just under $30K for '08 years.

The F150 with ecoboost looks really nice and has more than enough power for the open trailer.

Being cheap and not having a place to store a trailer I went the way of another Rennlister flat towing the car behind my wife's Honda Pilot. Haven't taken it on a long trip but works great for local trips.

Did the same. Sold my B6 S4A for my new DD/tow/family hauler; 08 Sequoia Platinum. I do miss the Audi, but the towing and space is nice.

Same progression here - except for my trailer is a 24'. Drive to the track => open trailer => Enclosed with Diesel, and yes the 2500 gets nearly the same MPG as my 964 so I swap between them.

In all seriousness, I would go with a diesel Q7. Good mileage in and around town, comfortable, able to tow a good size open trailer.
