Default Das Sport roll bar,are harness guides necessary ?

Hey guys,

I recently picked up a used Das Sport roll bar for my 89 911 Coupe and the PO cut off the harness guides ...
Are they necessary or is there an alternate method to keep the harnesses from moving ?
That was the whole idea behind getting a roll bar as i plan to get some Recaro's over the Winter and installing harnesses for next year's track events !
Should i weld some guides in before i repaint the roll bar ? I do approx 12 track days per season
and the rest of the time it's street driven !

Any feedback would be appreciated as i'm going to repaint the roll bar tomorrow ...

Cheers!
Phil

Most of the time the guides are in the wrong place anyway. You can weld new ones in the right positions or use shaft collars that can be placed anywhere you need them.

every installation is different but here's a trial w/ both in place

the outer might have been ok but the inner was way off where it needed to be.

you need to sit in the seat to see the fetch of the harness

then adjust the collars accordingly, put some tape over mine in order to keep abrasion to a minimum, there should be s slight narrowing dependant on the distance from shoulder to bar

Thank you Bill !
I think i prefer the collar route as compared to welding back the guides which will most likely be
in the wrong position anyways ...

Regards !

The aim would be to weld them where they are needed.

You won't be legal without them if your current seats don't have guides, at least PCA events.

I can't think of a single custom (legal) PCA cage that has those harness "guides."

I use zip ties to keep mine from sliding around. Works fine.

I'm simply pointing out the facts. He said he's "going to get" Recaros, which means to me he has stock seats. PCA changed regs a few years ago that you cant run harnesses without guides. Stock seats/no guides=no harnesses.

Guys,

The Recaros and harnesses are for next year only ... the bar is going in tomorrow but i'll finish the season with my stock sport seats and seatbelts !
The PO supplied the guides that he cut off but rather than weld them back on in the wrong position it looks like i will be going with the collars instead which can be positioned correctly ...

Cheers!

The guides are more likely to do more harm than good if you have a DAS bar and racing seats. Without the guides, the belts will self center behind the belt holes in the seats when tightened, and will be optimally placed. If the guides are a little off, they will only chaff the belts. That is what happened in my case, anyway. I removed the guides, and the system worked a lot better. Guides would be helpful if you are using stock seats, because they will not be directed correctly by the seat cut outs.

The roll cages can have guides. The seats have harness holes.

Your point? You have to have the seat holes. He doesn't right now. But it's a moot point for now, as he will run stock belts for now.

I posted and deleted earlier, bc I don't like the idea of running stock seats with harnesses, but if you are going with the recaro's just double wrap the shoulders around the horizontal and your fine. You only need guides if you were using the rear seatbelt bolts and up through the guides. Better to wrap.

I was wondering about those collars as well as they seem rather expensive on certain "performance" sites ...
Anybody have any suggestions ?
Just to clear a point... stock seats ans seatbelts for this season, all the other stuff will be a Winter upgrade !
Thank you for all your help guys

Cheers!
Phil
