Why We Wear Nomex
This is why you wear Nomex. It also shows why you need to practice getting out of your car in a hurry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6YHGon8emQ

Good God! Is this the same one we were talking about a month or so ago?
A LeMons car with no windows?
I bought more Nomex and have worn it since that posting.

Wow that happened fast! Glad he's okay. Incredible how the camera and film/memory didn't get toasted.
Is he running without a rear window?

And he did receive burns. We will have all the old equipment on display at the Sterling store. Nomex suits don't look good when nets melt on them.

There is a long thread about the burns, and hospitalization on the NASA Az forums. I followed that for quite some time, but this is even worse than I imagined - just a complete blowtorch! This is a huge wake-up call to us all, and we'd do well to follow "Gum's" example, and get some more protection. Tage's protected areas did well. The unprotected ones had terrible burns.
I hope Tage's recovery contiues to come along!

I don't think he was wearing a Balaclava from what I remember reading, I might be wrong. I believe he had burns on the back of his neck. I bought a balaclava after seeing the thread. Crazy Video!!

Here is a link to the long thread on NASA's Arizona's website where he discusses the incident. He's doing well, one remarkably lucky guy....

Actually having a rear window would have significantly reduced the impact of the fire on his body.

I seem to recall that all exposed parts were burned; ankles, wrists, and neck.
They have to change that rule about knocking out windows; it would have been a minor and inconsequential underhood fire.

I thought nets were fire resistant?
Oh and Bill which head socks are long at the neck that tuck well into the driving suit? Most of the ones I see are just at the or below the collar a couple inches and then pull out when you turn your head or bend over to tie your shoes. Same with socks. I got 4 pairs from different people and they are all short ending just above the ankle bone. I want a longer sock like an athletic tube sock so I'm not exposed at the ankle if my suit rides up getting in and out of the car.

I do wear the long sparco balaclava and even if wear a three layer suit (bought from OG racing), I wear a long sleeve underwear too.
It is so cheap compared to the price of my skin...
Glad the driver is nearly ok!

Tage commented in his NASA thread that the only areas that suffered burns were exposed. His gloves, socks & shoes, and suit all did their job, it was the back of his neck and face which suffered injury. The flames were under the car and sucked in via the open rear hatchback. They got to his neck thru the shoulder harness hole in his seat and wrapped around his head onto his exposed face. Had he dropped his faces shield and worn a balacava his injuries would have been significantly dimished....
