Default Electric steering pump issue (on 996)

Just installed a front electric steering pump on the 996 and having an issue

No biggie. Just that the pump ( and other accessories like cool suit, blowers, camera etc) are consuming more than the stock alternator can match so the car is effectively running on battery i.e. about 30 mins. on full charge. This would be a limiting factor in any race over 31 mins.

I copied a friend's set up, who, like any good chef excludes key ingredients in a passed along recipe, never mentioned the likely problem.

So undoubtedly a heavier duty alt. is required. Question is which one. I believe stock is 120a- is 150 going to be enough?

It was suggested that TT alt. (996 I presume) was the one to get and can be had on EB for $500 and is 4lbs vs. 8lbs to boot ($125 per shedded pound)

David,

I'm sure you have already checked but I was having the same problem and it turned out that the wire on the back of the alternator had come loose. Also you may want to check all of your grounds and such.

Any chance of getting the upgrade parts list? I've been thinking of doing the same.

TIA
Lon

I don't think the problem is the alt. Measure the current you're using. That alt is pretty big 125a at least

997 Cup, with electric P/S uses a 90 amp alt.
I'd keep looking as I would be willing to bet you have another issue causing a draw somewhere.

FWIW with my Motec I have a PDM which digitally controls all power so I record real-time current draw on every circuit on my GT2.

My max current draw during A race is only 26 amps (not including my Koolbox helmet AC which draws an additional 20 amps itself).

My monster fuel pump draws 14 of the 26.

It sounds hard to believe you are truly consuming 120 amps ; however I of course could be wrong.

I would do some research to find out what your car with the options you have should draw...

We actually used a Mercedes pump.
Guess we'll check everything related before we replace.

Seems original alt was faulty and may have been thrown over the edge by the new pump.
Fortunately we have a spare motor with 150a alt that we can pirate.
That should solve the prob- I hope.

we've installed a few electric pumps into 996 cars. Never had a current draw problem with the stock alt. You need to look and see what's going on.
