Race ABS Conversion on 987.2 Cayman S
#16
I tried the BMW abs in two Grand-Am 911s and hated it, maybe it will work better in a mid engine car? They were like hitting an ice patch when the ABS kicked in compared to the 996 GT3 cup ABS. Don't need no stinkin ABS on the 997 cups, locking up saved my *** at Sebring this year. I prefer more control.
If you tried the straight BMW E46 ABS, I understand completely, that is why the Motorsports programming is critical. I have heard of a few people/companies trying to shortcut the cost of the "real" system by just using the E46 Teves street system with "stock" programming.
I've driven the real program in a couple 911's and a Cup, and it was flawless in my opinion. For 99.9% of the drivers it is a better way.

I can attest to the Viking's comments, as he knows his stuff. The factory M3 brain was adequate at smooth tracks. The CSL brain was better at smooth tracks. The fancy Motorsport brain probably rocks on the surface of the moon, it's that good. All food for thought. I'm going to start working on sourcing connectors, harnesses, etc. to see if we can get lower than the $7K mark but if you want the fancy programming, there's no way around it other than finding the right source and paying up for it. And while I know where to find them, I have no idea how much they cost.
Cheers!

Neel@ApexSpeedTech can get you setup, they have a lot of experience and know what works. Plug n play basically for them. I'd highly suggest calling him to set something up. Save time/money and have Neel hook you up.

It may interest people on this thread to know about some information coming out of Germany.
Earlier this month a Ferrari 458 Italia won the 6 Hour race at the Nordschleife/Nürburgring outright and set the fastest lap time. As far as I can recall that's a first for Ferrari in 12 years.
Three particularly interesting pieces of information came out of this.
Semi-related, during a night out in Stuttgart a few years ago it emerged that Bosch and many other notable engineering firms in the area has a taste for precision machine tools made in northern Italy. We forget how Germanic the Lombards are! (The GKN LSD used in the M3 is developed in this region, for example).

- One of the co-drivers works for PAG as the pre-delivery tester of all race 911s. He stated that he had never driven a tyre/chassis combination that cornered at the Nordschleife as fast as this one. The tyres were Hankook, but as its a factory supported car, its unlikely that Tirerack has the same ones in stock.
- The car has a Magnetti Marelli ABS system at present. This is being upgraded to the Bosch MS version in time for the Nürburgring 24 Hours. This might not have as many complications as might be imagined. Some years ago I sat with an ECU specialist as he prodded the MM ECU in a Lamborghini. He discovered that the architecture was (uncannily) similar to that of Bosch and did not have to change what he was adding.
- The 458 is obviously very tough, as of early May, one of the car's drivers has had over 10,000 kms of testing.

However, it's not by any means plug n play. It's the same exact system they're installing in the same manner so, anyone on the west coast that wanted something like this done locally could call them or they'll fly out to most places too.
It's apples to apples though. Same system, same methodology and similar pricing.

I would say that Neel and the guys from Apex have been putting these systems in as long as anyone so they're definitely as knowledgeable as anyone else out there doing it.
