Hey mooty,
If it makes you feel any better, I only use 1 set of Michelins for the PRC/SCCA weekends.. they seem to be more consistent across a session and over multiple heat cycles (and faster when new, and also cheaper!).
I don't know the exactly numbers, but I'd guess half the field ran 2 sets, most everyone else ran 1 set, and maybe 1 or 2 cars used 3 sets (a new set on Friday to dial in the car).
Don't let the tires scare you away from the cups. You can still get take-offs for almost nothing from the local guys. I still have 3 full sets of 1 session Yokos that I picked up for $100 each in my garage for the 996 WC car. :-)
