I have not driven one but... in this video the driver seems a tad late on a couple of the "attack" apexes... but not a bunch. Also one has to factor in the various "interpretations" of available track real estate in the esses and 14 exit/15 entry. I believe that this factor is significant, but do not yet know how much.

Okay Mike. I am sorry to hear about your mood. We do not allow that in PRC... we want our drivers to be happy and having fun at all times.

I think this sums it up:

"...And do as adversaries do in law,
Strive mightily, but eat and drink as friends."

Tranio, Taming of the Shrew, Act 1, Scene 2

Let us remember that if we do battle down the road!

I love Pirelli and the fact they're sponsoring the events. However, I wish they'd revisit the tire compound/model they decide to supply for the series. They only work great for 1 lap *maybe* 2. After that, they quickly go off. They don't heat cycle well, and even the difference between their grip at the start of a session/race versus the midway/end of that same session/race is pretty horrible.

I know they have better and more consistent tires available, but I have no idea why they won't supply them for the Pirelli Cup races. Conspiracy theorists will say it's so that people are forced to by 2 or 3 sets for a weekend. But even that would be fine, if the tires were more consistent over a single session.

In Fontana earlier this year I had to use 1 set because the Pirelli guys didn't bring enough sets for everyone. On sunday, I was about 2-3 seconds per lap slower (and it was my first time at that track, so i should have been faster on sunday all things being equal).

You're right: they are horrible...

I think there will be more set-up development for those Pirellis. In any case, in the future, I hope the company and the series administrators work with the drivers to get the recipe right. I can see the drivers spending lots of money, but I would think you'd want to have a little more consistent grip. I think that most folks want to have some fun in the corners when road racing.

I heard from several P-cup drivers there that they were all complaining to Mr. Franz about the POS Pirellis. The series was originally run on Yokes and there were strong suggestions to revist the decision to go Pirelli. I know one team who won't compete on the tires.....

That was amazing. the car sticks like glue. not even really pushing it from what I can see. (turn 8 was fast though! )

tires suspension and that power seems amazing!!! they are 500hp now, out of a 3.8 liter, right?

so, 2-3 seconds for the bypass, probably more like 3 with the speeds flying over the bypass. makes it a 1:48. the top transam guys are runnning 1:50s? Darrel anderson in the griggs mustang and Kip in the NSX 700hp monsters running 1:50ish too? wow! and this seems so clean and easy!

cool video!

who was it?

Damm.....a low 1:45 lap in a 2011 cup car.... On Friday I counted about 17 997 cup cars around the paddock.....I can't tell the differences year by year, but I did see a 996 cup too....

The video is Bryce Miller.

I went out to TH last week for a test day and had a buddy/pro helping me. He did a 1:48.5 over the top (I could only manage a 1:50.2) in my car. We didn't have as favorable track setup as the Pirelli races (cones setup in horrible places ), but needless to say.. Bryce's 1:45 over the bypass is straight up hauling the mail.

I remember Bryce. He was in one of the laguna WCGT races a while back with Mark and I.

anyway, it was FAST! wow!

so that print out of your car was the pro driving and you driving the 1:50. red him, green line you? who was you buddy?

that is really some great info. I would love to put one of those things in my car and see what is really going on during a lap!

Maybe Ill see you at one of the PRC races this year. I have some pirellis i grabbed from the trash after the GTGP race/ pirelli cup, last November. Ill have to give them a try! :

the cup guys were changing tires for rains and tossing away some really nice slicks. some looked like they hadnt been used more than a session. I'll give them a shot. should be better than 5 year old toyos!

The Grand-Am spec Pirellis are totally different to the PDC compound. Wish they were still available. I ran both compounds with PDC last October @ Laguna. Night and day.

Wish they were still available. Oh, wait did I say that twice?

Wish they were still available.

2005-2009 997 Cups are:
1. based on narrow body
2. stock 3.6 motor = 415hp
3. 57" rear wing
4. 9x18 & 9x11 wheels

2010+ Cups are:
1. based on widebody gen 2 RS (44mm wider rear and wider front with flares)
2. stock 3.8 motor = 450 HP
3. 67" rear wing (also about 4" higher up)
4. 4. 9.5x18 & 9x12 wheels
5. Front is 15mm lower and splitter extends almost 2" more forward for added front downforce (hence why the larger rear wing)

(basically this car has 2 times the downforce of the previous car and more mechanical grip to match with revised suspension tuning and parts.)

Hey mooty,

If it makes you feel any better, I only use 1 set of Michelins for the PRC/SCCA weekends.. they seem to be more consistent across a session and over multiple heat cycles (and faster when new, and also cheaper!).

I don't know the exactly numbers, but I'd guess half the field ran 2 sets, most everyone else ran 1 set, and maybe 1 or 2 cars used 3 sets (a new set on Friday to dial in the car).

Don't let the tires scare you away from the cups. You can still get take-offs for almost nothing from the local guys. I still have 3 full sets of 1 session Yokos that I picked up for $100 each in my garage for the 996 WC car. :-)
