Wow. What a story! Glad to hear the trailer and car were recovered.....and not found abandonded in some ravine or middle of a bonfire.

Hopefully insurance will cover the missing items.

Must be some kind of loophole to approach this with.
Insurance should pay for the truck and the attached trailer. The race car will need its own insurance - this is called towing and theft. Since it is a relatively large risk exposure, they won't just lump it in with other coverage (otherwise the rest of us would have to subsidize racers). It is also cheap - usually $500 or less a year from companies like Hagerty, Parish Heacock, even Geico. Also remember that when you're out on the course, you are on your own. Towing and theft doesn't cover any time with engine on.

Any news if they caught the SOBs?

Great news...I guess the truck is gone...but probably no sentimental value there. Now you can get that F-350 Diesel Dually you always wanted. :-)

Sounds like they were mostly after the truck which probably long gone, and got a little play toy for a couple weeks. I am sure they had no idea what to do with it once they had it.

Thanks again, everyone! What a much better Tuesday this is as compared to the past two!

I was thinking we ought to share some ideas on GPS tracking systems as I want one for the race car and for the trailer. The race car has a battery kill switch; the trailer is only powered when attached to a tow vehicle (which, of course, I still don't have, unfortunately - hmm, that dually-idea is attractive, but $$$ right now). So, part of the analysis needs to include battery power v. hard-wired. What are your thoughts? Getting race car back from shop late this week or early next and, NOW, I want protection! (S&W?)

Scott, great to hear. I am going to leave the thread open in racing for ideas on trailer security.

I used to sell GPS units to buy here pay here lots. They do work most of the time. I can tell you whatever you need to know about GPS.

Thanks, DR! Keeping this open for a while further discussion will benefit all of us.

I do think we need to consider GPS tracking security for race cars and trailers. In addition, I bought shackleless locks for the beaver tail and side door, as well as locking wheel chock for the trailer.

I wonder if a single GPS in the race car would protect the trailer when in it, too. Then, there's expense and make of the GPS system. Some have only the initial $700 or so purchase with no monthly subsciption fees (like Lojack, I believe) and some are an initial $400 or so, but require monthly subscriptions that can vary from about $15/mo. to $35/mo. Sure interested in others' ideas and experiences. Sure don't want to go through this again. When you put a car on the track, you have to do some mental preaparation for a "bad day" whether it be contact or mechanical, but I hadn't prepared for theft. Where I live is an older neighborhood in SE Denver/Arapahoe County that hasn't seen much auto theft according to the police. I guess track preparation involves more than I thought.

I really feel fortunate under the circumstances because the race car came back to me largely intact. It is, BTW, now insured, for a short time, with USAA under comprehensive as a "vehicle in storage" while it's being gone over by my/our race mechanic. Missing parts include right race seat and harness set, quick-release MOMO steering wheel, cool suit switch and maybe a few other things we haven't spotted yet, but that ain't bad. Happy to say motor present, runs and sounds okay; tranny present and works in brief check in parking lot. About as "happy" an ending as one could hope. Stripped trailer is functional; just needs to be outfitted again. Still nothing on the truck, but as noted above, no great sentimental loss, just a financial/deductible loss and my friend who owned it is a prince of a guy who is just happy the other two vehicles are recovered. All along, David Hoover said, "Hey, my truck's just a truck. It can be replaced, but we've got to get your race car and trailer back." True "thick-and-thin" friend! And always has been! But now the search for decent insurance coverage is also necessary. American Family on the truck says only liability coverage extended to the trailer; no theft. USAA on the trailer says no personal property coverage on trailer contents; look to homeowners. State Farm homeowners says personal property does not include auto parts. As I've said before, it sure felt personal to me when I personally bought particular items with personal money. Anybody have an auto part in your garage? State Farm says "tough" if it gets damaged through fire or whatnot, or stolen; although they proclaim on page 1 of the policy, "We protect your personal property anywhere in the world." Yeah, right. What's personal to us ain't to them!

Me likey these.

With some ingenuity - you could hide it anywhere. Trailer may need something different...but when hooked up - it would have power.

Or...just use one of these like Mad Max had on his Interceptor
