I would bet this happened during one of the first sessions of the DE when people don't know each other yet on the track.
Personally, I had this kind of thing happened when DE drivers are trying to test you until they have to admit they are slower. DE tend sometime to be more scary than private club days because people are less used to drive on track with each other; same thing applies to club race weekends (meaning being safer) because you will take note of the faster guys quickly during practice and test days.
