Default Do metal seats (ultrashield) require seat back braces for racing? (NASA)

Bought a 944 Spec and the seat was way far back, I moved it forward so I can actually drive it and the adjustabe back brace built into the cage is a bit too short.

Seat is an ultrashield, I read the NASA CCR but its confusing. Do aluminum seats require braces or is that mainly for fiberglass seats after they expire?

If I need to run it I have to have the tubing extended.

thanks!
Sam

All metal seats require a brace, and FIA seats over 5 years from date of production will need a brace.

We got caught by that rule at the 25 hour... they made us brace a very nice FIA Racetech seat that was 2 months past the 5 year date.

Hi Sam,

I have an Ultrashield in my 944, and I have a brace tied into my cage. Here's a view of it.

Thanks for the picture - here is what I have...obviously with the seat where I need it the tubing is not long enough.

Is the clamp pictured all that is needed, ie once you get it the brace in position, clamp the inner tube right next to the larger tube to keep it locked against the seat? I see no holes or anything for a bolt/nut is why I ask...

Thanks for the quick replies! Sam

Sam,

I'm with you ... I'd be looking for a bolt that runs through-&-through both tubes. On the other hand, Chris is an experienced and safe racer, so I'm guessing his seat back brace doesn't move at all.

The car is in the trailer, so I wiggled in and took so more pics for you. My seat is non adjustable. It's bolted to a frame, bolted to the floor. The back brace is also bolted to the seat and back to the cage. It's pretty rock solid. Like Richard said, there's a bolt running through the tube at both ends to fix it.

Wow, thank you for doing that!

Great - Ill have the tubing redone/extended and then add some bolts - my seat is fixed in position as well.

It does not have to be bolted to the seat. PCA requires padding so you might want to cover them both at one time.

It should be for metal seats. They are designed to use a bolt to the seat seat back brace. Fiberglass seats are not and should not have anything bolted to them.

Not to hijack your thread Sam but does anyone know if there are rule issues if two back braces were used, say two tubes coming at slight angles from the rear bar. Only reason I mention this is because the Kirkey manual says using more then one back brace will help with left to right stiffness of the seat.

I think for Sam's setup, he already has a spot for the brace and merely needs a longer tube to be done with it.

No issues with multiple tubes. Do what you believe will work. Just remember any tube from part of the cage to the body of car is considered a cage attachment point. A tube from the chassis to the seat is not part of the cage.
