Just saw a cut away of that motor at the KC auto show this weekend. TINY motor, TINY turbos...then i looked at the hp/tq rating....WOW. They might be on to something if they can get that kind of gas mileage. I have always been a chevy truck guy, but after seeing both at the show, I'd lean towards the Ford truck. For once, it seemed like they had a better interior and better body style. Never thought I'd see the day.

Great truck but if fuel consumption is your major concern buy the diesel.

I have a 2003 2500HD crew cab long box 4x4............it has a 120l tank and consistently returns 900km range so 13.33l/100km

Convert that to american mpg and 17.5

a race buddy has a 2002 2500 4x4 with the 8.1L big block GAS engine.....fuel economy is NOT its strong suit...but he did get about 8mpg towing an enclosed trailer at about 8000lbs in the mountains, through snow in very cold weather......I would guess it can do slightly better on level ground at steady speed...but I would guess 10mpg is about the best it can get....

the upside is it pulls like a dream....400ftlbs just off idle will do that...

This race/DE season is going to be expensive (I know, that was a bit obvious), like a few years back, when I spent $800 on diesel going to/from VIR.
For one event.
JAY get a good mileage car for the daily stuff and save the truck for special purposes.

Speaking of fuel mileage - I wonder how much I would gain if instead of running all terrain tires during the summer tow season I had highway tires.
Its not like I go off-roading.

Speaking of gas prices, I might have to ship extra tires/wheels and drive the race car to the track. the P!G is thirsty!

I have a Gas 2004 2500HD 4X4 crew cab as my work truck. It has been a good truck so far. 11.2 mpg per the onboard computer. This is 95% city driving and is likely lower than you might get as it includes snow plowing which eats gas without going anywhere. Use this as a worst case low point.

I'm looking to sell my old tow vehicle, a 2001 F250 Crew Cab/Short Box with the 7.3L diesel. Only a 4x2, so maybe not an option for you?

In any case, the display is currently showing me 19.2mpg in mixed driving, but leaning more heavily to hwy. At 65mph it will get 22-23 mpg. Towing a loaded 24ft enclosed trailer I got 11-13mpg depending on the wind conditions. Key was installing an Edge engine controller, made a huge difference in mpg.

What is an Edge Engine Controller?

I have a 2006 2500HD diesel. It gets 11-12 towing a 24' enclosed, and around 17 mixed. The best I've ever gotten hwy was 19.5. I've heard mileage is dependent on which rear end you have, which few people check when buying used. Some report getting 22mpg hwy with the right rear end.

i have the later 2009 2500HD duramax. the emission thing kills mileage.
combined hwy/local driving 15.8mpg, very consistent for over 48000 miles now.

towing at 75mph, 9 mpg but my box is 10,000 lbs.

IMHO it never pays to buy a diesel. For used, the premium is $4,000 to $6,000. For new it is $7,000 to $9,000. Even on the low side, used, $4,000 buys a heck of a lot of gas. I will have to admit, my old Cummins was a great engine, if I had kept it long enough, it would have probably paid off. But, I never keep anything long enough for the payoff. But, that's just me. Since 1990, I have had 2 race cars, and I've had 6 trucks.

mooty quote: towing at 75 mph, 9 mpg but my box is 10000 lbs.

You might try slowing down. With a large enclosed trailer, dragging that "barn door" through the air, kills mpg more than weight. When I pulled a 22' Pace with a F250 "gas" I went from 75 to 60mph and went from 8 mpg to 12. It works, but I will say it is boring.

I have the Evolution listed near the top of the page. It also adds gauges, which is nice.

Thats for all the post guys! I wish I could afford to buy the truck and then keep my GTI, but that isn't in the cards for this school teacher.

Im sure you can find a good price on a diesel truck with diesel costs close to 4 bucks a gallon.

BTW I have owned 2 Fords F-250's & i just bought my first Dodge 3500. The interior isn't as nice as my Ford but it tows great. I installed a Diablo predator tuner & i get 24mpg hwy & about 15 around town. I get about 12 -15mpg towing a 30 foot enclosed at 70MPH

I also converted it to run on WVO & Im enjoying not having to fill it up with diesel at 3.79.
