Late to the discussion, but a friend of mine pulls her open trailer and her track car with a Nissan Frontier and it does amazing! I have drive it to Canada and back with the 911 on the back and it did great. Got 18 MPG towing and 22-24 without towing.

Just as another talking point, I used to race a 5000# keelboat all over the Northeast, from Newport/Boston/Maine to Toronto to Annapolis to Winnipesaukee to Champlain to George throught the Greens/Whites and Adironacks. The best vehicle we ever used was a 1/2 ton van w/ factory tow package, lots of room in the van for bodies and equipment. But a 6 cyl 3.4L 4Runner could and did also do the job, just not as fast or as comfortably.

SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY!!!!! Don't know how much or how far you tow, but you can never have enough truck. Anything close to maximum ratings is grossly INADEQUATE, unless you are towing across a flat plain in moderate weather without any curves or idiots on the road. It is NOT about torque and horsepower, but stability, brakes and emergency reserves. I have towed 6K with a full size 1/2 ton truck, and even that sucks compared to a 3/4 ton. Go aluminum and as much truck as your lifestyle will allow.

4UEEAH has it right. Extra torque and HP are good to have, but when things start to go bad, (emergency braking, avoidance maneuvers, sudden crosswinds, etc) having the brakes and stability that (generally) comes with the larger, purpose-built tow vehicles may save your **** some day. Err on the side of safety - its about mitigating risks.
