As a Motorcraft distributor and supplier to some very large fleets I would tell you the first 2 years of the 6.0 had lots of issues. If maintenence is performed with quality parts (not necessarily Motorcraft other stuff works too) they are very serviceable. They got better as the years went by and the 6.4 is very good, but still not on par with the 7.3. The 7.3's run forever even with sketchy maintenence. We have 3 in our delivery fleet with over 500,000 miles (the top is 650,000) with no repairs other than the crank sensor. As suggested always run cetane booster.
Cheers

My 05 6.0 PSD Ex has about 57,5K miles currently and runs like a charm. So far the only warranty repair it has needed was for a torn turbo boot. Probably will take it in later this month for the 60K service as the factory warranty runs out in December, right after I tow down to Thunderhill for the 25.

The truck is great... lots of power and a huge interior. No worries about stuff getting stolen like a pickup, just set the alarm and walk away. Plus mine has some nice stuff like a power inverter and DVD player with screens for the back seats... I can watch my in car vids comfortably after the day is done!

I owned a 2005 6.0L PSD. Worked fine for me. All the Ford service people I talked to trashed the 6.4L as far as reliability.

I'd say 7.3L if you're getting an Excursion.

I have a 2003 7.3 excursion for the last 4 years bought with 36k and now have 70 K - It has been very reliable however I need to replace the warped rotors for the second time since I have owned it.

milage:
11 towing 20ft enclosed with race car - less if towing with someone else.
14 around town
17 on a trip - However, if I work at it, no throttle mashing, don't exceed 65 and not less than 45 up big hills, I have gotten as high as 24

Matt Romanowski had a '04 6.0 and it was sent back to Ford after a couple of months because of the Lemon Law, the '05 was better but I believe it had all kinds of Check Engine light issues. My Dad had a 7.3 PSD and loved it!!!!!

This is so true. There is no replacing an Excursion in the current market. As mentioned, ours is at 192k miles and I expect to use it for a long time to come.

Original owner of a 12/02 production 6.0 F350. 85K on it now, probably 1/3 towing 12K+ with the stacker. Don't drive it much at all anymore, so I did change the oil after a year this past summer. Have had the EGR deal dealt with, and 2 turbos (all warranty prior to the 5 years). Throws an occasional EGR code now, so I guess I need to address it sometime.

Hitching up the open trailer tomorrow for a short jaunt to Thunderhill. Truck doesn't even know there's anything back there merely hauling 4K.

It's not complete until you install a "wake the dead" hornblaster:

Great for moving the oblivious out of the left lane ;-)

Anybody still looking -- there is a cosmetically challenged 135K mile 7.3L Excursion listed on www.trackjunkies.org for ~$10k I think.

No affiliation -- but if I was looking -- I'd seriously consider it.

Coming from a ford diesel tech, 7.3l. Easier to work on, last for a long time, enough grunt to still get the job done, they aren't as unreliable as the 6.0 6.4 or 6.7

7.3 is the ONLY early 2000's Ford Diesel to own. My Excursion / tow vehicle has 203K on the clock and the only thing we have done is replace the alternator and glow plugs. Do not waste your $$$$ on the 6.0 units.

Funny to see this pop up... my 05 Ex 6.0 now has a whopping 71K miles. In just under 4 years I have done 14K miles - I bet it is one of the lowest mileage Ex's around.

Just put a few bucks in to bulletproof it. I was having a hot start issue which was a fitting on the high pressure oil pump, so while in there we did everything: coolant filter, aftermarket EGR cooler, new oil cooler, and all the other little stuff. Runs even better than before. Some day soon I will put better suspension on it... this thing is gonna last longer than I will at this rate. My truck has been awesome... I would not trade it for anything.
