Default No more lead wheel weights ?

Start hoarding them now, evidently the lead free fanatics have caught up with wheel balancing weights.
Soon to be banned from future production due to reduction of hazardous substances requirements.

Seriously?! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! Maybe we should focus on the economy one of these days...

I am going with depleted uranium, but other alternatives would be solid gold or tungsten.

On a slightly more affordable note, I am guessing zinc/brass will be the materials of choice...you'll just need more weights to balance the wheels.

Stacks of pennies. Then we'll have people stealing wheels to get the copper.

I guess so. A collegue at work who deals with these things (regarding electronics) was told this during a "lead free" regulation update.

No idea what the schedule is, but I've been told that lead fishing weights and lead shot/bullets have been discussed as well.

3M has had a lead-free tape-weight system that we've been selling for about 3 years now. The stuff comes in long rolls and you actually can cut the it to exactly the weight you want. It probably costs about twice as much per wheel, but there is no waste and it's not significant compared to the price of tires. And if 3M can do it at this price the generic stuff will be even cheaper. No big deal.
Cheers
Randy

The retards in the EPA, who obviously ate too much lead as kids, have backed off the proposed ban on lead shot & lead bullets due to massive public outcry. You may want to see if they have also backed off some of this other crap as well. I have a feeling that the change in political winds we saw 2 days ago will squash much of this idiocy...

C'mon fellas. This issue is years old and the 3M tape works fine. God forbid anyone try to regulate hazardous substances. What a stupid idea.

Last time I checked, lead poisoning causes irreversible neurologic injury. But hey, whatever it takes to get my wheels balanced.

Yeah, they already shut down a lot of outdoor shotgun ranges...

And forget about lead fishing weights -- maybe bismuth next?

The government needs like 300 laws max and if they want a new one they should have to get rid of an old one.

You eat your wheel weights? That's pretty stupid!

At the risk of getting into the weeds here, lead poisoning generally comes from eating lead-based paint, which many folks in D. C. seem to have done as kids. I am not aware of anyone gettting lead poisoning from wheel weights.

Just more needless intrusion into everyday life by unelected drones who need to justify their 6 figure salaries + lifetime pensions & taxpayer paid health care by "doing something".

You guys sure do cry about the government a lot.

Wheel weights are probably no big deal because they're so big, but the lead shot and lead sinkers thing was specifically introduced up here because a series of dissections of dead waterfowl on inland lakes in the 70s discovered that, on average, the shot that missed actually killed more birds than the shot that hit. To be clear, we only limit lead shot use over water, not on land.

Just to really spell this out for those of you who think that lead control is some namby-pamby liberal agenda: it takes two pieces of ingested lead shot in a gizzard to kill a duck. While lead passes through us pretty easily, birds ingest it on purpose and are stuck with it, often until it kills them.

Animals die all the time, from all kinds of other reasons, but is not being able to stick pieces of lead to your wheels really that big a deal when you have other alternatives? Come on.
