great thread
I also concur that even the most potent "street" cars are just no fun on the track now....and everything that makes "street" cars faster on track also makes them suck on the street....
I got into DE's in 2006 and only did a few events through 2007
In late 2008 I bought my 1st real race car and started attending lots of DE events, with time trials
Plenty of DE's-open track in 2009, but a blown up race car slowed down "real" racing
Did 1st "lemons" race in 2009..boy was that fun with 155 other cars on track!!!
2 more Lemons events in 2010 and plenty of DE-TT days (in lemons car)....
I hope to get a real race license soon and actually race in NASA norcal with you guys in 2011....GTS2 class here I come (hopefully)

"nothing other than starting a race with multiple vehicles and drivers trying to accelerate quickly and occupy the same space at the same time can prepare someone who has not yet raced for the start of a race."
--------------------
Hey, how about this -- HPDE where highest group and instructor group grid in no particular order. All enter track single file escorted by pace vehicle. Then take two or three laps to sort out more powerful cars to least powerful cars, while at the same time forming two by two. Once in place the "no restrictions on passing" HPDE session begins with green flag at start/finish tower. I've witnessed this, and it works well. Of course, participation in this rolling start session is voluntary.
