Default history buffs -- porsche disc brakes

ALL,

I'm writing an article for my Region and want to include a mention of Porsche's use of disc brakes.

The first street P-car to use them was the 1964 356C, I believe.

My question is: what was the first Porsche race car with disc brakes?

Does anyone know? (Was it a Works entry or done by a privateer?)

TIA,

Fred

I'm afraid I don't have a direct answer to your question, but I can suggest a resource. Ludvigsen's Excellence Was Expected would almost for sure have this information. My best guess would be one of the later model spyders like the WRS, or maybe one of Porsche's F2 or F1 racers that they ran in the late 50's & early 60's probably used disk brakes. By '63/'64 they were using disks on the racers, because the 904 had them.

According to Ludvigson, Porsche began experimenting w/ disk brakes in 1958, there were 2 experimental tracks
1) in house the program was Type 695
2) Dunlop supplied setup

the first race appearance was w/ Dunlop disks on the front of a Carrera coupe entered by the factory at the "Ring" 1000k in June 1959 driven by Herbert Linge and baron Pucci in the 2 liter sports class, the results were not good after 27laps(~2/3 of the race distance) the pads were worn out and needed to be replaced. As a result they gave up out side sourced sdiskbrakes and concentrated on their own version

the next appearance was in early '61 at the Targa Florio and LeMAns weekend and againg at The Nurburgring , the good results led to the adoption of Porsche Type 695 disks on Carera2 s in June '62
