Default Fierce competition, but hardly war

Maybe its because my son did two tours in Iraq and an acquaintences' son returned home from Afghanistan in a box last week, but I tire of hearing pro race car drivers claiming its a war on the track.

Carl Edwards just said it in the Michigan post race interview. Drivers aren't alone as football players are just as bad or worse. Certainly its a fierce competion, but its hardly war.

Amen brother! Too much drama from many without consideration for what real sacrifice is.

^ Perhaps for many it is, for others it touches too close to home. Cool with colloquialisms but when conflict is occurring in real-time it’s different for me.

Mike,

No doubt about it, you are quite right.

Speaking as a veteran, I would say thats its an unfortunate choice of words for people who have experienced combat and considering the current times, some sensitivity is always appreciated by those who have served.

Truth.

I always cringe when I hear the "it is war" comments, too.

War on drugs. Tug-o'-war. Man o' war. It's just a word. Nobody intend it to compare the frivolous fun of racing to the honorable actions of our troops.

It certainly changes one's perspective if someone you know is, or has been in harms way, or given their life for the country. Its interesting that NASCAR typically has made it a point to honor service people before every race I have watched and it just about brings tears sometimes. Grand AM and ALMS also take a moment. Those moments are truly appreciated.

It seems that some sports figures just haven't taken the time to really think about the differences.

For some reason, today, I could not keep my thoughts about this to myself. I am hopping off the soap box, now.
