I know huh! Ive done it as well. (differernt tires manf, different ages, and even one time, different sizes side to side by mistake) the most difference I ever felt was the tire with less grip was equal to the good tire being about 10psi over inflated. driveable, yes, but not dangerous. (well, the differnet size tire side to side was weird, because it was pulling to one side. Tire guy mounted the wrong size on one side and I didnt catch it.)
With a nice car and desire for quality track time, or absolute predictability in a race, even I wouldnt mix brands, unless it was on my practice set were it was only to get to the track, and shake the car down before qualifying.

Have run multiple 12 hour races on different tires front & back (not just tire models..we ran different brands), and have a friend who regularly would run the same races with 3 different makes of tires on the car.

It's just a tire. Don't overthink it.

hahah... R888's are totally responsible for the wreck car.. not pilot error ;O

selling th r888 fronts and getting new ra1 rears and shaving them for my next track event....

One of the most fun days I had at the track was when i put some corvette street tires on rear of my car from a friends car, after cording my original set the first day of a 2 day event. Spent 2 hours on a empty track having fun with my car.

The most tail happy i ever felt a car, but god was it fun and a lesson in car control....and learned how tiny throttle input could steer the car... that day was worth 10 track days, and took my driving to the next level.

you know what they say, bad drivers never blame themselves.. they always blame the equipment!

When new, they are a respectable track tire in the dry, and they are quite good in the rain.

Mixing tires on the other hand is a very bad idea.
I have raced on the R888. They are decient tire and wrecking is caued by being dumb not the tires. Mixing tires is a recipe for bad handling. Even so that should not cause you to wreck. Just force you to drive slow.

I like the Nitto's a lot. Very similar to RA-1's but available in better sizes for my car. I never shave them, they seem to last just as long as RA-1's, maybe even a bit longer. Staying on topic, last weekend I ran NT-01's on the rear and newer RA-1's in the front with no adverse effects at all.

I found some goodyear R1s in the trash, look pretty good! Im going to put them on the front and use with my current almost corded RA1s on the back for my commuter and practice session set up. As a side note about them, a 275 on an RA1 vs the good year is almost 1" difference in width. Point is, sometimes different manufacturers sizing can be a lot different and should be looked at before swapping tires at the track.

Heard very good things about the Nitto NT01 (like what you state above), but have never run them.

Personally I would never try to set-up car on mixed tires. I have at times run my car mix age RA-1. IE 3 tires with 10 heat cycles and one tire with 20 heat cycles. Car always had an odd balance and I would be chasing my tail to turn the car with that. That is why I always try to race with tires that have the same heat cycles. I also try to roate them each day at the track because too much time at one corner will cuase small changes in grip level and has turned car that understeer slight to an oversteering car by moving fronts to the back.

Now if you just driving around at 90% instead of close to 100% then the differences nothing to worry about.

only downside is that neither of those tires have 255 or 265 option for 18" - only 245.

i am not sure how it will change car balance to go from 265/335 to 245/305 RA1 or to 245/315 NT01. but a lot of people use 245/305 on 9"/12" rims and say it is the best option, so, who knows.

Some clubs expect same tires front and rear. I have seen some ugly situations eve running different compounds with the same brand tires. All you have between the road and your car is your tires. Be smart.

I've got six track days on a set of NT01s (about 30 h/c). They were slick for one session/cycle, but then have gotten progressively better. At this point, the "tread pattern" is barely visible and I'm down to the two circumferential grooves. There's no doubt in my mind that these are RA1s with a different tread pattern. All the same characteristics. They seem happiest at 39-41 lbs hot, but they're not awful at lower temps.
