NJMP Thunderbolt, 12 hour recap
Guys...
I know there are some fans on here, like myself, of running the LONG races like the VIR 13 hour, 25 hr Thunderhill, etc.
This past weekend was the first (hopefully of many more) "Devil in the Dark" 12hour at NJMP, Thunderbolt. Basically, after last year the Wash DC SCCA decided to no longer host the long standing '12 hour at the Point" (Summit Point) and the NJ SCCA picked up the slack and relocated the race to Thunderbolt.
The result was AWESOME. A first class facility (hotel suites above the garages, great pavement, etc) paired with a group that knows how to run a long enduro well PLUS track ownership that promoted the race.
31 cars started, which was a bit light, however with NASA hyperfest and Grand-AM Mid Ohio the same weekend... it was about right.
I was part of a three driver team in an SSM miata, owned by PCA buddy Bob Dimarco. We stayed consistent and relied on Mitchum Motorsports for flawless pit-stops... and ended up not only winning our class but finished second overall. Spraying champagne on the overall podium will be something I wont forget for a long time... and a neat upgrade from the lack of celebration we're used to at PCA events.
I know there are plenty of endurance Porsches sitting in garages up and down the East coast that could put a whooping on our 102 hp spec miata... so keep an eye out for this event next year
...or come run the VIR 13 hour in late October.
