Default year old race gas - still good?

Have some leftover 100 oct from last season. Stored in the garage over the winter in 5 gal. plastic jugs and some in the tank of the car.

Not sure how much it degrades over time. Have usually mixed in fresh with the old stuff years past, but have a lot leftover this year. Is it ok to run the old stuff straight? Or save it for the lawn mower?

Yes, will work fine in your lawnmower or passenger car blended with fresh gas but I wouldn't use it in a car that requires 100 Octane. From what I have read (which of course may be BS too!) modern gasoline starts degrading after about two weeks. Next time get a bottle of Sta-Bil, at least it will keep it in better shape. Of course if your car will run fine on 93 I would blend it 50/50 with new and use it, but that's me.

I'd do the same as Gary.

Don't dump it down the sewer

smells great when run through the lawnmower.

Oops, at least the 110 leaded did.

a friend of mine ran his PCA stock class car with gas that was stored in it for about two years. started and ran fine. Burned a valve in the engine on about the third session/first day out. the mechanic who rebuilt the engine came to the conclusion that the gas had broken down and lost much of its octane, thus resulting . I agree with the other posters that it will burn great in your lawn mower or snow blower.

I like mine on the rocks with a twist. It usually ages better in an oak barrel rather that a plastic jug, but to each his own.

I just bought a 55 gallon barrel. I will surely go through it during the season, but are there any ways to keep the gas inside the barrel as fresh as possible, aside from burning it in one weekend?

Tx.

Don't worry about that Charles - you're going to use most of it next weekend anyway! My car burns 5gal every 15 mins of running time.

For what its worth - here is the question/reply to the Sunoco Racing Fuel Tech Dept:

Subject: Shelf life of Sunoco 260GT Race fuel

What is the recommended storage life of your 260GT Unleaded racing fuel? I have some on site that has been stored since last fall, so approx 8 months since purchased.

Since it is an oxygenated fuel, I assume that is with ethanol? So it will have absorbed moisture, which does degrade the octane/knock rating?

Thanks for any information,

Jim: the shelf life of 260 GT is about 2 years or so. Yes, it has ethanol in it (9 volume percent). Any water that may be absorbed and dissolved in the fuel will be less than 1% and will not reduce the octane rating. Some folks feel it may actually increase the octane rating (think water injection...) but we’ll just stick with saying your fuel will be fine.

Thanks for the inquiry,

Mike / Sunoco

Mr. Benson,
I'm heading up to the TC's to pick up the kids for the summer, I'm sure I could put a tankful in the family truckster to help you get rid of it.

Head up this wknd and will meet you at BIR. I will let you use it for parade laps in the truckster.

Either that, or instead of using it in the lawnmower, was thinking about skipping a step and pouring it directly on the weeds.
