Default WGI Repaving

Does anyone know what they are repaving? I was told it was front straight from bridge to T1...and that there is one lane open.

This from our DE Chair re cancellation of Potomac's late June DE at WG:

Track management notified us that they will be making repairs for the IRL race and the track surface will need time to cure. The effect of these repairs is that WG will cone off the front straight with cones and tire packs starting at the walk-over bridge near the beginning of the front straight to the apex of T1. This will reduce the track to one lane for almost all of the front straight through the apex of T1. Other factors, there is no passing between T10 and T11. This means for all but the instructor groups, there will effectively be only one lane traffic between T10 and the top of the climbing esses.

The actual repaving is the left side of the braking zone for T1. Began crumbling during the PCA club race weekend, really started coming apart during the Grand Am weekend.

+1 - I was at the worker station at turn 1 for the Grand Am race, and it was creating some headaches. We were sending out inspectors after every session on Friday to monitor the conditions. Towards the end of the Continental race there was several pounds of loose pavement collected on the outside of turn 1.

Interestingly it didn't seem to cause any issues during the main 6-hour race. Must be that the shorter braking distances of the DP and GT cars put their heaviest loading past the worst of it. Could also be that the temperatures went down quite considerably by the time the 6-hour started.

Jim
Just out of curiousity, do we have confirmation that the entire front straight will be a single lane for the niagara event, or will there will be a short passing zone early on the front straight?

No indications from WGI other than the cones/tire packs will start at the walkover bridge. If they transition gradually enough we might be able to squeeze off a passing zone early on the straight. We won't know what it will look like until Friday when Zone 1 is there. We will have passing between T10 and T11 regardless, as well as every other straight.

Passing between t10 and 11 is a novelty. Pretty short transition between track out at 10 and getting back across for T11. Probably should address that "which side should I signal?" confusion in the morning.

See you at registration.

There is TONS of passing opportunity on the front straight. The cones don't even begin until the Start/Finish line.

That's great news, so other than the line into T1 there is really no big issue. Should be room on the front straight to pass even with the cones no? It's wide enough for 5 cars normally.. anyone have any pictures or video?

Jim, first of all thanks for posting this info!

Second, how much track do the cones take away near T1?

Hope all goes well up there today for you!
