Should I kiss 17" Goodbye?
Mickey gave up on 17s. I have been using Pilot Cup Sports for several years. I have the stock RSA Wheels with street tires, and a set of Boxter Wheels in 17, and run 225 45 in the front and 255 40 in the rear on the track. The Boxter (7 & 9) offsets are 55, and I have to run spacers to keep the right rear off of the oil line.
At Tire Rack the only plug and play option is the BFG R1s. I just DE and the Mickeys worked because I could use them for my limited street driving, and lasted for my 10 - 15 day season. I know pretty much all of you Club Racers who are still on 17s all use Hoosiers (D,E & F).
I'm doing a 3 day in a week, want to have a solid set of backup tires. I'm wondering about how others still on 17s cope with the growing limited tire choices. 225 45 still has pretty good availability, but I'll probably have to go wider on the rears for any additional choices.
If I buy another set of wheels I will be looking for OEM 17s or 18s. They have always worked well because they are strong and light enough for my need, and there are alot of them out there, so they are good for my cheapness.
thank

maybe RA-1s shaved
I had a couple of sets back in the day on my old 3.2. I borrowed a set unshaved inthe rain a couple of years ago. When it dried out they were pretty squirmy.

Nitto NT01s right out of the box are great tires, slightly better IMHO than the RA1 and don't need shaved. Don't care for the 888s at all, fast at first but cycle out and go off with plenty of tread left, both on the 944 and the 964.
I upgraded to 18s, if you do you will need spacers and keeping weight down is important, some 18 s are really heavy. Also they seem to put more heat in the brakes as well, never had an issue prior to going to bigger diameter wheels even with the same widths.

it depends
That really depends on what you are looking for. IMHO in the heavy later cars they are awful squrmy unshaved. If you are looking to make a transition from street tire to a first DOT-R, or looking for something for wet or cool days, then unshaven RA-1s fit the bill.
To compare with some of the better dry track tires (for me) they would have to be shaved. I don't think that they would blister or chunk if they are not shaved, but they would slide around (especially when hot).
Unshaven RA-1s are a great step in the learning curve, but that is a whole nother thread.

Im currently using 275 17 BF Goodrich G-force T/A KDs up front and they grip insanely well for a street tire...
