Default Fuel Cell in 944

I'm entered in the Legends of Motorsports event at Barber in a couple of weeks. They require fuel cells, so anybody with a 944 and a fuel cell where did you put it?

If you have some photos, please post them and let us know what size cell. Thanks.

Ideola went pretty hardcore with the fuel cell in his 924. If you are gonna put one in, I'd do it like that.

I don't think either ATL or FuelSafe have an off the shelf solution.
Kokeln has one of them make a cell for them--you can buy it from them and get the details on mounting.
Jason's 968 TRS has a cell in the location of the original tank, no fuel above the muffler, made by Premier I think, but I wouldn't expect you could get them to duplicate it for you unless you provided the drawing.
Worldwide, when they were in business, had a cell made for them they sold--no idea how to get a copy.
I had a custom cell made by FuelSafe, mounts to some angle welded to the body and uses straps to hold it from below. Here's a photo from below. I'm bringing the exhaust out the passenger side.

Hope this helps. There are posts in some of the other forums about 944/968 cells that may be easier to work into. Sure is a shame we don't have what the 911/964/993/996 and 997 guys do--but I suspect it's simple volume of purchases.

Buddy of mine has one. Cut out the old tank, and mount it in the stock location, I'll see if I can get him to post some pics.

Note that many sanctioning bodies do even require it to be in the stock location (well, of course, in our cars that means as close as you can get with a completely different shape!)...

My daughter and her boy friend have one mounted in the "trunk". It pretty much fills up the whole hatch area. I'll see if I can get Josh to post some pics

I wanted to vintage race with Mark so I converted my 84 to a late style transmission mount and relocated the fuel pump to the back side of the cell.

I put in a Fuel Safe custom built unit. They are pretty expensive and are not an off the shelf unit. I got it for a great price, all in I have $750 in the project.

rough location.

I don't have a finished picture on this computer. I covered the unit with an aluminum skin and used the stock filler hose and cover.

I can dump fuel in very very fast.

Thanks guys. HJK, that setup won't work for HSR, there has to be a firewall between the tank and the cab.

Brent, that's a nice setup, not sure that Michael has time to have one custom built before the race.

Tim,
Did you decide on what color Frankencar ver 2.0 is going to be yet? Have you started the build yet?

I think that Michael has come to the realization that dropping a fuel cell into his new 944 race car in less than two weeks is not a good idea. Given that HSR is the only group he will run with that requires a cell, it just isn't worth it.

Brent - the rebuild has begun, I am leaning towards GT3 RS orange, my wife wants purple

Some of the vintage groups allow the plastic tank 944's. I know at the KIC they can run with the plastic tank. That conversion can be done in two weeks. With an early car just cut out the welded transmission cross member and convert the tranny mount to the late car. Weld in the appropriate hanger tabs etc...

Tim,
Definitely Orange. I wanted to do the BOSS car in orange but stayed period correct.
