Cool project. I think what most are saying here is that a factory built race car will hold its value significantly more than a street car conversion. The rarity and allure of a true Weissach built machine will always be held in higher regard by the majority of motorsports purists.
Unless the Cup is put on its roof, it will hold its value. The converted street car will not. I am currently experiencing that fact as I try to sell my race-converted RSA.
Good luck with your build.

996 and 997 cups aren't rare at all. you can buy them with eyes closed. try to find a 964 cup or 993 cup.

Years out a factory built race car will almost always be worth more than similar condition private built car.
The reason is that a factory built car is always factory built. Even if it has no history and has just been club raced all it life it is still a factory race car. It is true the proliforation of the 996 cup cuts the value of all of them probably less than 964 or 993 cup, but there is just something special about a factory built race car.
The only way a non-factory build car can be worth more (again assuming similar mechanical condition) is that if it has some sort of unqiue history. That could be competition history or may built by a special aftermart tuner/raceshop etc. For example.. a Koni challege car built by TRG and that was drive by (insert your favoratie name) and won the championship is probaby going to be worth more than factory 996 cup driven in PCA club races mid pack.
Of course today value will also be determined by actuall on track performance, but I am mostly talking about long term value. Lets face it 964 and 993 cups are no longer the fastest cars on the track. You can go faster for alot less. However they are still special cars because they are factory built. A 993 road car converted to cup specs may be equal in speed to 993 cup, but will always be street car converted. So it value is mostly driven by its ability to run lap times.

wow, impressive! Same car that was racing with me in the GTGP race?
(probably from my Avitar pic.
that car had some acceleration, and certainly had impressive braking and cornering for its first time at laguna on that race day.
