Trying to figure out the laws around importing a race car from Canada. Looks like you have to DESTROY it after 5 years or else send it back.
I'd have to think there's a way around that. Anyone have any experience?

I may be naive here but if you have a bill of sale/title and it's never registered for the road, why would it need to be "imported"? throw it in a trailer and bring it down...

I'm not sure how it would work if it was a car built from a body in white, no vin, never on the street. I would think it would be permanent.

Depends on the age of race car as well as use of car i.e. dual use or pure race car...
I imported a Porsche Rothmans Challenge race car from Canada. It had a Canadian title. With the help of PCNA, I was able to get paperwork to show car's conformance to DOT/NHTSA when originally produced. This allowed me to make the car streetable and registerable in the US. Follow the rules for importing a street production car to the US. After gathering all the paperwork including EPA exemption, I used a customs broker.
If the car is a pure race car and not a street car, then there's no need for it to "import". Just trailer it over the border.

With all do respect, that is the worst advice possible. I basically did just that, and was fined 100% of the sales price of the car by US Customs.

What happened to NAFTA? If it is a race car you don't need a tittle. If you run it hard it will be destroyed in five years and if its not destroyed the parts on the car will all be non canadian. To bad on the fine from USA customs seams like FUBAR to me. What if you traded the car for a magic bean? The car is Canadian, how about you trade for the car for a case of beer?

OK, after reading your other thread I have a couple questions.
Was it built into a race car in the US or Canada?
Does the current owner have the bill of sale or import records from when the car was bought in the US and brought into Canada?
Could it be brought back into compliance with EPA and DOT standards, even temporarily? (Might not matter if it was built into a race car in the US)
