LSD? I'm in the market. Guard or Porsche?
That must have been frustrating. Can't wait to hear how it felt once you turn it off.....

LSD's are one of the most valuable mods you can do to a 911 based race car. Getting power down to both wheels coming off a turn is just half of their value. Stability under braking and late braking into a turn (threshold braking?) is where I find them most valuable. You'll be pretty amazed how different the car feels, it will take a few sessions to understand the forces at work and how to best utilize them. Assuming you don't have a OEM LSD (2 disc and very rare) to begin with, I'm not exagerating when I say it will transform your car....

As for manufacturers, The Porsche 996 GT3 Cup LSD (4 plate) and the Guard GT LSD (4 plate) are the premier units available. Both sell new for around $2,700. and you can't go wrong with either. The Guard clutch discs are often used for replacement in Cup diffs and are considered to be superior. Also you get damn good service from Guard.

There are 2 less expensive diffs that I know of and both have very good reputations. I used a Kaaz (Japan) diff in my hotrod Boxster experiment last year and it worked really well. It too has 4 clutch discs. I raced it first at Cal Speedway last year and the car was rock solid and planted. I was very happy with it....

The other diff is a Giken (also Japan). There have been some threads here on RL about the diff and those that have tried them seem to really like them. I believe they are a 16 disc LSD. G-Box in Boulder, Co. sells them and the Kaaz unit too I believe. They are both around $1,800....

Good luck, you can't go wrong with any of them....

Guard, no contest. That's what I have in my 996. I would however, really like to try that 16 disc Giken someday....

Is installing a LSD a DIY type drop in job, or do you need to get it set up by someone that knows how to set them?

Have an experienced shop do it correctly to avoid issues.

There's adjustments/shimming that has to be done correctly or you'll break things like axels, gears, etc. It's not a huge job, but definitely needs to be done by a pro who has experience with Porsche diffs....

Will you have it together for Spring Mountain? I'd love to feel how it works. We could trade for a few laps.......

I must admit that I have run across a few diff's that didn't require adjustments. But unless you measure and know ........
