Before I place my order, thought I'd get opinions from those that have 'em as to whether or not to go 3-layer. The TPP differential isnt huge, 31 versus 24 which is easily made up with some carbon-X skivvies, typically ~15. Given that a tpp of 39 puts you over SFI 3.2A/10 this seems more than sufficient. OTOH, presumably using cX undies somewhat defeats some advantages of an st3000 in terms of lightness and breath-ability. And this is a rare instance where the cost of upgrading is comparatively minimal. One further thing to note is that typically I run a cool shirt, though I suppose if I were truly worried I could pony up for a Cx version.

So while I'm leaning toward 2 + cX, I thought I'd ask for opinions from owners and particularly anyone with 3-layers or who has had the opportunity to compare the two and three layer versions.

I've got a 2 layer (can't compare against the 3 layer) and it's really light and comfy even on those real hot & humid days. Wear it with Stand 21's full Cx underwear and it should provide solid protection. Of course, the 3 layer SHOULD provide more protection.

Either 2 or 3 Layer IMO: Just discipline yourself to wear it whenever you are on the track. A buddy neglected to do so in a “simple DE” and whilst he was rounding a bend blamo engine fire. He had a lipstick camera on his helmet so we could all watch the video and give him a hard time over it. He was lucky and he knows it.

Thanks, I'll take the advice and go for 3. For the record, I've worn a suit at every event for the past three years. Feel naked without it.

No, no. Solid advice. My current suit is piece of garbage, really heavy and hot, but I've learned to live with it. To add to your comment, once you get to the point where you feel the need or are required to wear a suit, don't skimp; buy the best you can afford. Personally, I'm really looking forward to having graduated to a lightweight correct fitting suit.

I have the Stand 21 ST3000 and it is very comfortable and of excellent quality. Not too hot and I do not use a cool suit. Helmet is pretty nice too.

My wife gave me a custom/made to order Stand 21 suit for Christmas. I'll be going to LA in 2 weeks to do the fitting. In discussions on the phone, they've suggest 2-layer as more than adequate.

Just to be clear, you guys are saying 3 layer even with the ST3000? I'd normally never give it a second thought but I'm talking to Chad at Stand21 and he is saying that the 2 layer is the standard and way to go with the 3000.

Even with Stand21 I would go with 3 layers given the choice. There is nothing special about the fabric they use. They just do a great job of putting it together and while construction of a suit does have some effect on the fire resistance, the extra layer is a nice big plus.
